The holiday is the civil marker at the other end of summer from Memorial Day. September is early autumn on the calendar, yet the first Monday still feels like a last outdoor weekend in much of the country. What day is labor day, as a date, changes every year because the rule is a weekday in a month, not a number such as the 1st.

Find it by opening September and taking the first Monday you see. If 1 September is a Monday, that is the holiday, as it was in 2025. If 1 September is a Tuesday, as in 2026, the Monday is the 7th. The latest it can fall is 7 September; the earliest is 1 September.

It is a federal holiday. Federal offices, courts, and the Postal Service close. Many schools treat it as the last break before a new term settles, and some districts start the year in the week before so that this Monday is already a holiday inside the school calendar rather than the day before opening.

Labor Day weekend

Labor day weekend is the Saturday, Sunday, and Monday that end with the holiday. When is labor day weekend in 2026: 5–7 September. In 2027 it is 4–6 September. What day is labor day weekend as a single date is a misfit question; the weekend is a span. Monday is the legal day. Saturday and Sunday are the ordinary weekend beside it.

Friday 4 September 2026 is not Labor Day. It can still be a travel day. Employers who grant a four-day weekend are adding Friday by policy, not following the federal list. If a form asks for the holiday date, write the Monday. If a friend asks when people leave town, the honest answer often starts Friday evening.

Because 2026’s Monday is 7 September, the week after still contains most of September. The season after the holiday is still summer by weather in many places and autumn by month name. The unofficial “end of summer” is a social reading of the first Monday, not a solstice.

How this Monday differs from May

Memorial Day and Labor Day are both Monday holidays that bookend the US summer in ordinary speech. They are not the same distance from the solstice, and they do not share a month. Memorial Day hunts for the last Monday in May; Labor Day hunts for the first Monday in September. One can land on the 31st of its month; the other can land on the 1st of its month. In 2026 they are 25 May and 7 September.

Parades, sales, and cookouts attach to both weekends. The labor history sits on the September date: the holiday grew from nineteenth-century labor movements and was made a federal holiday in 1894. You do not need that origin to find the Monday, but it is why the name is Labor Day and not “September weekend.”

If summer had a door, Americans would hang it on two Mondays: one to swing it open in May, one to click it shut in September, while the sun keeps its own schedule either way.
