When is international women s day
International Women's Day is March 8 every year. The date does not slide to a Monday. In the Northern Hemisphere it sits in early spring or late winter, depending on how you start the season.
when is international women's day
March 8 is a fixed civil date. If it is a Wednesday, the day is Wednesday. If it is a Saturday, the day is Saturday. Countries that give workers a day off still mean the 8th, and some add a substitute weekday when the 8th is a weekend. That substitute is a work rule. It does not rename the 9th as International Women's Day.
The United Nations has marked 8 March as International Women's Day since 1975, during International Women's Year. In December 1977 the General Assembly invited states to keep a United Nations day for women’s rights and international peace on a date of their own tradition; the U.N.’s own observance has stayed on 8 March. Earlier women’s days in the 1910s were kept on more than one spring date. The date that stuck for the international calendar is March 8.
Season language depends on the hemisphere. North of the equator, March 8 is either the first week of meteorological spring (which starts 1 March) or the last stretch of winter if you wait for the March equinox. South of the equator the same date is early autumn. The day is not a solstice and not an equinox. It is a numbered day in March with a political and social history, wearing whatever weather March brings that year.
Date: 8 March, every year. U.S. federal holiday: no. March in the United States is Women’s History Month; that is a month designation, not a day off. Public holiday: yes in some countries, no in others. Read the local labour calendar. Season: late winter or early spring in the north; early autumn in the south.
A March date, not a long weekend
Unlike Martin Luther King Jr. Day, this observance was not built as a Monday holiday. You cannot answer “when is international women's day” with “the second Monday in March.” People who only know U.S. federal Mondays reach for that pattern and miss the 8th. Mark the numeral. Then see whether your office, school, or country treats that numeral as a day off.
Flowers, strikes, concerts, and school programs all attach to the 8th. They do not move the 8th. If a city holds a march on the nearest Saturday, that Saturday is the march. International Women's Day remains March 8. File the photos with the date of the march and the name of the day as two different fields if they did not coincide.
March 8 does not wait for a convenient Saturday. The season can be raw. The date is still the 8th.
