The folklore “early spring” and the astronomical start are different clocks. Groundhog Day results, when a town announces shadow or no shadow, are a local performance. They are not a weather model and they are not a revised equinox.

The civil calendar still advances. Only the film loops.

Where it sits among winter dates

2 February is also Candlemas in the Christian calendar, an older midpoint-of-winter marker that the groundhog custom grew beside. It is not a US federal holiday that closes banks. Schools and shops run a normal weekday unless 2 February falls on a weekend, in which case the ceremonies still use that Saturday or Sunday date; they do not move to Monday.

From 3 September 2026 the next Groundhog Day is 152 days away. That wait is shorter than the 198 days till the northern spring equinox, because February comes before March.
