When is day of the dead

Day of the Dead is observed on November 1 and November 2. It is an autumn observance, strongest in Mexico and in Mexican communities, not a floating Monday.

when is day of the dead

The dates are fixed on the civil calendar. November 1 is often devoted to deceased children (Día de los Inocentes or Día de los Angelitos). November 2 is Día de los Muertos for deceased adults. Some families begin on the evening of October 31. The season is late autumn in the Northern Hemisphere: after the October harvest, after Halloween in the United States, before Advent and before the December holidays.

The pairing with All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2) is historical and liturgical. Day of the Dead is not “Mexican Halloween.” Halloween is October 31. The ofrenda, the visit to the cemetery, and the food for the dead sit on the November dates even when a town also sees costumes the night before.

The dates do not slide to the nearest Monday. If November 1 is a Wednesday, the day is Wednesday. Schools, offices, and banks in the United States do not treat Day of the Dead as a federal holiday. In Mexico, the calendar around those dates is a national matter: some workplaces and schools close or shorten hours, and the public observance is the point of the week. This page does not invent a single nationwide close for every Mexican employer.

Late autumn, not a winter feast

November 1 and 2 sit in the short-day part of the year north of the equator. Cemetery visits often happen in daylight that already ends early. Marigold petals, candles, and sugar skulls are autumn things in that climate, not midsummer festival gear and not a December nativity calendar. If you are traveling, you are in the fall shoulder: Halloween weekend can spill into the same trip, Thanksgiving in the United States is still weeks later, and Christmas is a different season.

Southern Hemisphere calendars still print November 1 and 2. The season there is spring, not autumn. The dates do not flip to May to chase a season. The observance follows the numbered days. October 31 evening: some households begin the welcome; in the U.S. this night is also Halloween.

November 1: children who have died, in many family customs; All Saints’ Day in the church calendar. November 2: adults who have died; All Souls’ Day in the church calendar. The days around them: markets, public ofrendas, and school events, on local schedules.

The dead are not given a convenient Monday. They are given the first two days of November.

What the season is not

Day of the Dead is not Memorial Day (last Monday in May, late spring in the U.S.). It is not All Souls moved to a weekend for shopping. It is not a U.S. federal Monday, so U.S. banks use their ordinary November hours unless a different holiday lands nearby. Veterans Day is November 11, a separate autumn date. Do not merge the two Novembers into one closed week.

If you need a meeting date, write November 1 or November 2, and name the year. “Around Halloween” is sloppy: Halloween is the 31st, and the ofrenda days are the 1st and 2nd. “Sometime in fall” is worse. Fall in the U.S. also holds Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, and the end of daylight time in most states. Those are other clocks.

Food, altars, and cemetery hours follow local practice. A parish or a town can publish a procession time. That time is local civil time on those November dates. There is no worldwide Day of the Dead hour. Light the candle on the evening you have, on the date you mean.
