The same question arrives as “when is the chinese new year” and “when does chinese new year start.” The start is the first day of the first lunar month, at the new moon that begins that month. It is not 1 January. Gregorian New Year is a separate civil date and does not move. Chinese New Year moves because the lunar months do not line up with January and February the same way twice.

Recent and near dates, in the Gregorian calendar: 2025: 29 January, Year of the Snake. 2026: 17 February, Year of the Horse. 2027: 6 February, Year of the Sheep, also called Goat. New Year's Eve is the lunar day before those dates. The festival that follows is often called Spring Festival. Public holiday length is set by each government and can change from year to year; the first lunar day is the thing that does not depend on a holiday memo.

Why the date moves through late winter

A lunisolar year is built from lunar months, with a leap month added in some years so the calendar does not slide through the seasons. The new year is therefore tied to a new moon in a winter-to-spring window rather than to a fixed Gregorian square. Over a run of years you will see January dates and February dates. You will not see July.

In East Asian agricultural language the festival is a spring marker even when the Gregorian weather is still winter in the north. That is the seasonal answer: the year is turned toward spring, not toward midsummer. If you only watch 1 January, you have already missed this turn, or you are still waiting for it.

Lantern Festival falls on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, at the full moon that closes the traditional new-year period. Counting fifteen days from the first lunar day will get you there; counting fifteen days from 1 January will not.

When is new year, and which one

“When is new year” needs a name. Civil new year in the Gregorian calendar is always 1 January. Chinese New Year is the lunar first day listed above. Other lunisolar and lunar new years exist and can fall on the same night or a nearby one; they are not automatically the same ritual just because they share a moon.

If you are planning travel, food, or time off, use the lunar first day as the anchor, then read the local holiday notice for that year. A date of 17 February 2026 is a Tuesday. The weekday, like the Gregorian date, will be different the next time the Horse year is not the point — next year the date moves again.

The new year starts when that first lunar month begins, not when a wall calendar flips to January. If you only circle 1 January, you are marking a different year.
