When come around green day is a tangle of two searches. One is the band Green Day and the song “When I Come Around.” The other is the ordinary wish to know when the year turns green: lawns, trees, a street that stops looking like February. 17 March in much of the northern interior is still early for full leaf. You can wear green while the oak is naked. That is the joke the season plays, and it is also why a colour holiday is a poor frost date. 22 April is deeper into northern spring and closer to the weeks when many temperate places actually look green, still without being a botanical law. 4 May in Japan is a legal holiday with a plant theme; it is not the band, and it is not Saint Patrick’s Day moved by a month.

If the real question is when walks stop being grey, watch local signs instead of a global countdown. Buds swell. Lawns lose the hay colour. Light first, leaf later. That order is why January can feel brighter and still look brown.

The same caution applies to “when does it get green where I live.” Your town’s parks department, a nearby phenology record, or last year’s photos of the same street are better than a single national day.
