What is lunar new year

Lunar New Year is the new year on lunisolar calendars used in China and several East and Southeast Asian cultures. On the civil calendar it falls in late January or February.

what is lunar new year

The date is not January 1. It follows the new moon that opens the first month of the lunisolar year. In the Chinese civil-lunar conversion that many public calendars print, that day currently lands between January 21 and February 20. The festival is often several days long. The civil square people mean by “when is Lunar New Year” is the first day.

In Chinese it is also called Spring Festival. That name is a season word, and it is doing lunar work, not meteorological work. In the Northern Hemisphere late January and February are still meteorological winter: December, January, and February. Astronomical winter lasts until the March equinox. So the “spring” in the festival’s name is the turn toward a new agricultural year on that calendar, not a claim that the air has already become March.

In 2026 the first day was Tuesday, February 17, the start of a Horse year on the Chinese zodiac. In 2027 it is Saturday, February 6, a Goat year. Do not copy February 17 forward. The lunisolar drift is the reason the civil date walks inside that January–February window.

A winter civil date called spring

Households in the north mark the festival in winter light: short days, indoor gatherings, and, in many cities, evening displays after dark. Households in the Southern Hemisphere mark the same civil dates in late summer. The moon does not flip for the equator. The season on the ground does.

Vietnam’s Tết, Korea’s Seollal, and other lunisolar new years share the same family of calendars and often the same new-moon day, with their own foods, visits, and public holidays. This page is the shared clock: a new year that waits for a moon, then prints a Gregorian date in winter for the north. It is not a claim that every custom is the same in every country.

Find the first day of the first lunisolar month for the year you care about. Treat that civil date as Lunar New Year’s Day, not January 1 and not the March equinox. If you need the eve, take the civil day before; many meals and travels sit on that eve.

For the next year, convert again. Do not add 365 days to last year’s square. The festival is named for spring and lands in northern winter. The moon is on time. The weather is allowed to disagree.

What moves and what does not

The zodiac animal moves in a twelve-year cycle. The civil date moves inside a roughly month-long window. The season in the north stays winter. Those are three different clocks. A Horse year does not make February into May. A Goat year does not freeze the date on February 6 forever.

Public holidays attached to the festival are a matter of each country’s labor law. Some places close for several days. Others do not close at all. A diaspora city may keep shops open and still fill a parade route. None of that rewrites the new moon. If you are planning travel, read the country’s holiday notice for that year. If you are asking what the day is, the answer is the lunisolar new year, printed in late January or February.

January 1 on the Gregorian calendar remains the civil new year in countries that use that calendar for work and school. Lunar New Year does not replace that January 1. It sits beside it, a few weeks later, in the same winter. You can mark both. You cannot treat them as one square.
