It is a day set aside to plant trees and to notice the ones already in the ground. It is not Earth Day. Earth Day is 22 April, a broader environmental date born in 1970. Arbor Day is older and narrower: trees, shade, orchards, windbreaks, and the habit of putting a living thing in soil on purpose. National Arbor Day in the U.S. is the last Friday of April. States also keep their own Arbor Days on dates that match local planting weather. A desert April is not a northern April. The Friday is a national banner. The local date is the one that will keep a sapling alive.

J. Sterling Morton, a Nebraska journalist and later U.S. secretary of agriculture, proposed a tree-planting holiday to the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture in January 1872. The board named 10 April 1872 Arbor Day. The name beat “Sylvan Day” because Morton wanted fruit trees in the idea, not only forest trees. Nebraska later made the day a legal holiday and for a time used 22 April, Morton’s birthday. The national custom settled on the last Friday in April. President Richard Nixon proclaimed that Friday as National Arbor Day in 1970, the centennial stretch of the first Nebraska planting.

From 3 September 2026 the next National Arbor Day is Friday 24 April 2026, already past if you are reading after that Friday, and then Friday 30 April 2027. The date moves because it is a last Friday, not a fixed numeral. Do not tattoo “April 24” as if it were Christmas.

Nebraska first, then a Friday

Nebraska in the 1870s was short of trees. Settlers wanted windbreaks, fuel, lumber, shade, and fruit. A planting holiday was practical before it was poetic. Other states copied the idea through the later nineteenth century. Schools took it up. The Arbor Day Foundation, based in Nebraska, still uses the last Friday in April as the national hook and runs tree-planting programs year round. A foundation campaign is not the same thing as a federal closing. Tellers still take deposits that Friday. You plant after work, or a school plants during the day, or a city parks crew plants because that was already their week.

Other countries keep arbor or tree days on their own calendars. Some use March, some the monsoon, some a monsoon-adjacent weekday. Do not export the U.S. last Friday as a world law. If you are planting outside the United States, ask that country’s date and that climate’s planting window. A sapling put in frozen ground to satisfy a calendar is a waste of a tree.

Not a U.S. federal holiday. Payroll still processes that Friday. A tree planted to make a Friday look virtuous will still need water on Saturday. The holiday is the first hour. The tree is the rest of the years.

How to keep it without a parade

Plant something that will live where you live. A native species in the right hole beats a fashionable sapling in the wrong one. If you have no ground, help a park, a school, or a neighbor who does. If you have ground, call before you dig: utilities and city rules are part of the work. Water, mulch, and a stake if the site is windy. Then leave the tree alone enough to grow. Arbor Day is not a trophy photo. It is a future shade you will not fully sit in this year.

Walk a park. Learn the names of the trees on your street. Replace a tree that died instead of paving the stump. Those acts keep the day even when you cannot handle a spade. If you needed Earth Day, that is 22 April. If you needed a federal holiday in spring, look at Memorial Day, not this Friday. If you needed Arbor Day, take the last Friday in April as the national reminder and plant when your ground will accept the roots.
