The question is usually about a date, not about a riddle. “What day was Monday” in ordinary search language means “which calendar date was the Monday that just passed,” or “which weekday was this date I have in mind,” with the words in the wrong order. If you already know the name Monday, you already know the weekday. What you may not know is the number on the month.

From a known today, last Monday is today if today is Monday, or the most recent Monday before today if it is not. Next Monday is the coming one, including today only if you are speaking before the day starts and your local clock still says Sunday. Civil midnights are local. A Monday in Tokyo is not the same stretch of hours as a Monday in Chicago.

ISO 8601 weeks start on Monday. Many U.S. wall calendars start on Sunday and print Monday as the second column. Both grids still call that column Monday. The numbering of “day 1” changes. The English name does not.

How to recover last Monday’s date

You do not need a story. You need a grid. Open a month view that includes this week. The Monday in the current week is the date under the Monday heading. If today is Thursday, last Monday is three days back. If today is Sunday, last Monday is six days back on a Sunday-start week, and “this week’s Monday” may already be in the past or still ahead depending on whether your week started Sunday or Monday.

Write the date as month, day, and year if you are filing anything. “Last Monday” decays. By the following week it names a different square. Email and timesheets that say only “Monday” become arguments. The weekday is the label. The date is the record.

If today is Monday, last Monday may mean today or the Monday a week ago; say which. If today is Tuesday through Sunday, last Monday is the Monday of the week that just contained it. ISO weeks: Monday is day 1, Sunday is day 7.

Monday as the week’s hinge, not a holiday

In much of the world Monday is the first workday. In those places “what day was Monday” is also “when did the work week start.” In U.S. retail, Sunday may have been the busy day and Monday the quiet one. The name does not tell you whether a shop was open. It tells you the column.

Public holidays sometimes sit on Mondays on purpose, such as several U.S. federal observances that use a Monday rule. That does not make every Monday a holiday. An ordinary Monday is an ordinary weekday. If you are trying to remember whether a closed office was closed because it was Monday or because it was a named holiday, you need the date and the holiday table, not the word Monday alone.

Crossing the International Date Line can make “Monday” arrive early or late relative to home. You still land on a Monday locally. There is no eighth weekday. If a message stamped Monday looks wrong, check the sender’s time zone before you rename the day.
