Weekend futures

Weekend futures are derivative contracts that either sit dark on Saturday or, for some cryptocurrency products, keep trading while ordinary weekday desks are off. Read that contract’s hours. A neighbour’s pit is not yours.

Time By Online Alarm Clock

How it works

A futures contract is a dated obligation, not a weekend plan. Most traditional futures on a venue such as CME Globex trade through the working week in a nearly round-the-clock electronic session that begins Sunday evening in Chicago and runs into Friday afternoon, with a daily maintenance break. Saturday is closed. That closed Saturday is the ordinary “weekend” in this market: screens dark, Sunday evening the reopen, Monday morning the first full weekday the cash world recognises.

People type weekend futures when they want two different things. One is “can I trade this on Saturday.” The other is “what happens to my position while I am away.” Those are not the same question. A closed Saturday means you cannot exit on that civil day on that venue. A position you still hold into the Friday close is a position you carry through the dark hours into Sunday’s reopen. News does not wait for Monday. The venue might.

Cryptocurrency futures are the loud exception on the same family of screens. CME Group opened its cryptocurrency futures and options to trading twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, from 29 May 2026, with short maintenance windows rather than a Saturday blackout. That is a product-class rule, not a blessing on every futures contract in the building. Equity-index, energy, and grain hours stay on their own boards.

If two apps disagree about whether Saturday is live, they are looking at different products or different venues. Name the contract. Name the venue. Then read the hours table for this week, including holidays. A holiday weekday can be as dark as a Saturday for a given pit and still be Wednesday on the wall.

Saturday is closed for most of the pit

For the bulk of listed futures, Saturday is not a slow session. It is off. Sunday evening is the first print of the new electronic week. Friday afternoon is the last. The daily maintenance window on weeknights is a pause, not a weekend. Do not treat a 60-minute weeknight halt as proof that Saturday must also be open “somewhere.”

Weekend gap talk is talk about the dark interval. Price can move in other places — overseas cash, crypto spot, a different derivatives screen — while this contract is closed. When Globex returns on Sunday evening, the opening print can sit away from Friday’s last print. That jump is a calendar fact about a closed Saturday, not a law of nature and not a number this page will invent.

Name the contract and the venue. Read weekday hours, including the daily halt. Read whether Saturday exists at all for that product. Read Sunday reopen time in the zone the venue publishes, usually Chicago for CME.

If you cannot hold through the dark, flatten before the Friday close your rules require. Prop-firm and brokerage rules about being flat for the weekend are house rules on top of the venue clock. The venue may allow a position through Saturday. The account may not. Those two clocks should be written side by side, not assumed to be friends.

Crypto hours that keep the weekend

On the CME cryptocurrency set that moved to a seven-day clock, Globex stays up through Saturday and Sunday except for published maintenance: two minutes from 16:00 to 16:02 Central Time Monday through Friday, and a longer window from 02:00 to 04:00 Central Time on Saturday. ClearPort follows the Saturday window. That is the weekend shape for those products: almost always on, with a Saturday plumbing break, not a two-day sleep.

Clearing does not become a seventh business day because the screens stay lit. CME assigns weekend and holiday crypto trades a trade date of the following business day. Settlement, margin, and regulatory reporting wait for that weekday. You can trade on Saturday. The back office still wants Monday, or the next weekday that is not a holiday.

A futures pit that sleeps on Saturday is not timid. Most listed hours still end with Friday and wake on Sunday evening. Do not copy crypto hours onto a stock-index future, and do not copy Friday’s last print onto a Sunday open and call the difference a plan. The weekend is a calendar object. The contract either respects it or, in a small listed set, works through it with a maintenance hole. Read which kind you hold before you leave the desk on Friday.

Questions and answers

Do ordinary CME futures trade on Saturday?
No. The common Globex week runs Sunday evening through Friday, with a daily halt. Saturday is closed for those products.
Do CME crypto futures trade on the weekend?
Yes, from 29 May 2026, except for short published maintenance windows, including a longer Saturday break in Chicago time.
If I trade on Saturday, is it a Saturday trade date?
For those crypto contracts, weekend and holiday trades take the next business day’s trade date for clearing.
