Weekend edition saturday
Weekend Edition Saturday is NPR’s Saturday morning news magazine, the weekend counterpart to weekday Morning Edition. It commonly airs 8–10 a.m. Eastern and is hosted by Scott Simon.
How it works
The program is two hours. Stations may start it earlier or later in local time, and they insert local news, weather, and traffic. The national clock NPR publishes is Eastern: 8:00 to 10:00 a.m., with additional feeds later in the morning. If you hear it at 6:00 a.m., you are in a zone that is not Eastern, or you are on a station that chose an earlier local slot.
Weekend Edition Saturday began 2 November 1985. Weekend Edition Sunday followed on 18 January 1987. They are siblings, not repeats. Saturday is its own show. It wraps the week’s news and makes room for longer features, arts, sports, and interviews than the weekday morning program usually allows.
The weekday sibling is Morning Edition. That show runs Monday through Friday. It chops the hour into more, shorter segments. Weekend Edition uses fewer, longer segments so a story can breathe. If you want Friday’s headlines on Saturday, this is the program that took the week and sat down with it.
Saturday, not a weekday briefing
There is no Weekend Edition on Tuesday. A clip you hear on a Wednesday podcast feed is still Saturday’s show, or a piece cut from it. The weekday is when much of the news happened. Saturday morning is when this desk talks about it at length.
Scott Simon hosts the Saturday program. Local stations add their own hosts in the breaks. Do not treat a local break as the national hour. If you need the sports conversation or the long interview, stay through the national segments; those are the ones that do not move to Monday.
National Saturday show: Weekend Edition Saturday, two hours, Scott Simon. Weekday counterpart: Morning Edition, Monday–Friday. Typical national window: 8–10 a.m. Eastern, then later feeds. Not a substitute for a weekday hourly newscast, and not the Sunday show. Weekend Edition Saturday is the week, heard after the weekdays have already spent it.
Sunday is a different show
Weekend Edition Sunday is hosted by Ayesha Rascoe. It has its own habits, including a weekly puzzle segment with Will Shortz. Recording Saturday’s show and playing it on Sunday does not make it the Sunday program. If you searched “Weekend Edition” on a Monday, you are already two days late for Saturday and one day late for Sunday; the on-demand episode is the way back.
Stations sometimes delay or split the hours. A farmer who hears hour two at noon still heard Saturday’s show. A commuter who only knows Morning Edition will find the weekend hours slower. That slowness is the point of the format: Saturday is not trying to be 6:30 a.m. on a workday.
If a holiday falls on Saturday, the show still exists as a Saturday program. The weekday grid is off. This one is not. Check your station’s holiday hours; the national magazine still has a Saturday date on it.
