How it works

The Victoria Day holiday is a federal statutory day in Canada. The rule is simple to state: the Monday preceding 25 May. Queen Victoria’s birthday was 24 May, and the Monday rule keeps a long weekend near that birthday without gluing the day off to a single numeral. In 2026 the Monday was 18 May, already past from Thursday, 3 September 2026. The next Victoria Day is Monday, 24 May 2027, two hundred and sixty-three days from this Thursday.

Schools, banks, and federal offices in Canada follow that Monday. Provinces apply it as a statutory holiday with local labour rules. Quebec keeps the same Monday as National Patriots’ Day, a commemoration of the Patriotes of the 1837–1838 rebellions, not a second royal birthday. Same square on the wall. Different public name. Fireworks, cottage openings, and the unofficial start of summer are customs around the weekend, not the legal test. The legal test is the Monday.

Monday before the 25th, not a secret

People type victoria day and victoria day holiday for the same Canadian Monday. Victoria's day with an apostrophe is the same hunt with a possessive. There is no separate “Victoria’s Day” on 24 May that closes Ottawa while the Monday rule closes Toronto. If 25 May is itself a Monday, the holiday is the Monday before that, so the 18th, as in 2026. Do not memorise 24 May as if it were Christmas. Recalculate the Monday each spring.

Find 25 May of the year you mean. Take the Monday that precedes it. That Monday is Victoria Day in Canada; in Quebec, check Patriots’ Day on the same date. From 3 September 2026, skip the already-used 18 May 2026 and wait for 24 May 2027. If you packed for a long weekend in May, check which country issued the Monday.

Not Victoria, Australia, and not Britain’s bank map

Victoria is also an Australian state, with Melbourne in it. That Victoria’s public holidays are Australia Day, ANZAC Day, Melbourne Cup Day, and the rest of the Victorian gazette. They are not Victoria Day. A search that mixes “Victoria” and “holiday” without “Canada” is how a traveller plans a Toronto weekend and lands in a Melbourne workday, or the reverse.

The United Kingdom does not close on the Canadian Monday for Queen Victoria. British spring bank holidays follow British statutes. A royal birthday parade in London is not this holiday. The nickname “May Two-Four” in Canadian speech points at the 24 May weekend and at a brand of beer; it is slang around the date, not a second statute. Offices still want the word Monday, not the slang.

From this September the wait is into next May, not into next week. Put 24 May 2027 on a Canadian calendar as a repeating Monday rule, not as a screenshot of 18 May 2026. The 2026 Monday will not come back.
