Veterans month
Veterans month, in U.S. usage, is November: a month of recognition around Veterans Day on 11 November. It is not itself a federal closing of banks or mail.
How it works
The United States already has a statutory public holiday for veterans: Veterans Day, 11 November, listed in federal law as a legal public holiday. In 2026 that date is a Wednesday. Federal offices, mail, and many banks follow the holiday rules for that Wednesday. The rest of November is an ordinary civil month unless a separate state or local list says otherwise. Calling the whole of November “veterans month” does not move payday, school, or the Thursday of Thanksgiving.
From 2017 through 2024, U.S. presidents issued proclamations naming November National Veterans and Military Families Month. Those texts ask the public to honour veterans and military families with ceremonies and activities. A proclamation of that kind is not a second federal holiday. It does not close the country for thirty days. It is a named month on a ceremonial calendar, renewed when a president issues it, not a permanent row beside Independence Day.
As of early September 2026 this page does not treat a 2026 November proclamation as already on file. Look for the White House text for the year you are in if you need that year’s wording. The Wednesday on 11 November does not wait for a month-long banner. It is already on the federal list.
The Wednesday, and the other November marks
Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, tied to the 11 November 1918 armistice that ended the fighting of the First World War on the Western Front. The United States later renamed the holiday to honour veterans of all its wars, not only that one. The date stayed 11 November. When 11 November falls on a weekend, federal observance for workers may move to a Friday or Monday under ordinary holiday-observance rules. The commemorative date is still the 11th. A parade posted for Saturday is a local timetable. It does not rewrite the statute.
November also holds Thanksgiving, the fourth Thursday of the month. In 2026 that Thursday is 26 November. Thanksgiving is a separate federal holiday with a separate job: a national day of thanks, not a veterans’ day by definition. Native American Heritage Month is also observed in November in the United States. Those rows can share a calendar and still be different work. Do not spend 11 November on a turkey craft and call the veterans’ date kept. Do not spend Thanksgiving on a military parade and call the Thursday kept.
Veterans Day: 11 November, U.S. federal holiday. In 2026, Wednesday. National Veterans and Military Families Month: November, by presidential proclamation in recent years, not a closing. Thanksgiving: fourth Thursday of November. In 2026, 26 November.
Memorial Day: last Monday in May, for the war dead — a different date and a different honour. Armed Forces Day: third Saturday in May, for those now serving.
What the month is for, and what it is not
People use November to visit, write, volunteer, check on a neighbour who served, or point relatives at official benefits information. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is the civil door for many federal benefits questions. A themed graphic is not a claim. A discount some restaurants offer around 11 November is a business choice for that year; it is not a right and not a proof of service. If a business asks for identification, that is their rule for the offer, not a new law.
Memorial Day in May honours those who died in service. Veterans Day honours living veterans and, by custom, the fact of service. Mixing the two speeches is how both get thinner. May also carries National Military Appreciation Month in U.S. usage, and Armed Forces Day on the third Saturday. Those May marks are about the force and the calendar of spring. November is the autumn cluster around the 11th. If you needed a closing in May, look at Memorial Day, not at a November sticker.
Keep 11 November on the list as the legal public holiday. Treat “veterans month” as November recognition, not as thirty closed weekdays. Use Memorial Day for the dead, Veterans Day for veterans, and Armed Forces Day for those now in uniform.
If you needed a benefits answer, use the official office, not a caption. A month can hold a thank-you. It cannot stand in for the Wednesday someone still has to keep an appointment. After Wednesday 11 November 2026 the next Veterans Day is 11 November 2027. Do not set a repeating alarm on a random November Monday. Set it on the 11th, then check whether your employer moves the paid day when the 11th is a weekend.
