Unity day
Unity Day in U.S. schools is PACER’s bullying-prevention day: wear orange. In 2026 that Wednesday is 21 October. Other countries use the same two words for different public dates.
How it works
PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center named Unity Day in 2011 as the signature date of National Bullying Prevention Month, which is October. The instruction is small on purpose: wear and share orange as a visible stand for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Orange is autumn’s color and a high-visibility color. It is not a political party color on this page. From Thursday, 3 September 2026, Unity Day has not arrived. The organizer’s 2026 date is Wednesday, 21 October.
PACER describes the date as typically the third or fourth Wednesday of October and tells schools they may pick another day in the month if that Wednesday conflicts. The national square for 2026 is still 21 October. A campus that wears orange on the 14th has not failed a law. It has used the permission PACER already printed. Name the date you actually kept.
National Bullying Prevention Month itself began in 2006. Unity Day is one Wednesday inside that month, not a substitute for the other thirty days. A T-shirt on the 21st does not finish the work, and skipping the shirt does not erase the month.
Same name, other countries
German Unity Day — Tag der Deutschen Einheit — is 3 October, the public holiday for German reunification in 1990. In 2026 that date is Saturday, 3 October. It closes German public life. It has nothing to do with orange in a U.S. hallway.
India’s National Unity Day, Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, is 31 October, the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, marked since 2014. Russia’s Unity Day is a different November date. If your search was for a legal closing, ask which country. If your search was for a school color day in the United States, you want the orange Wednesday.
U.S. schools, 2026: Wednesday, 21 October, wear orange (PACER). Germany: 3 October every year, a public holiday. India: 31 October, National Unity Day. None of these is a U.S. federal holiday. U.S. offices stay open unless a local school calendar says otherwise.
Orange on one Wednesday is a signal, not a cure. The month is still October after you change shirts.
How a school keeps the Wednesday
Students, staff, and families wear orange. Some share orange laces, posters, or a short assembly. PACER publishes a guide and does not require a purchased shirt. A district that already has a local kindness week in another month can keep both. It should not rename German Unity Day as a pep rally.
October 2026 is crowded: German Unity Day on the 3rd, U.S. Columbus Day on Monday the 12th, National Coaches Day on the 6th, Mole Day on the 23rd, and this Unity Day on the 21st. They do not merge because they share a month. Put each on its own line.
