Trimester weeks

A common year has 52 weeks plus one extra day. Pregnancy is dated in about 40 weeks from the last menstrual period, split into three trimesters, not into a calendar year.

how many weeks to a year

How many weeks to a year is a calendar question first. 365 days is 52 weeks and 1 day. A leap year of 366 days is 52 weeks and 2 days. You do not get a clean 52 or a clean 53 unless you switch to ISO week numbering, which some years hold 53 weeks by design. That leftover day is why a birthday slides one weekday later in a common year, and two weekdays later across a leap day that sits before the birthday.

A human pregnancy is not that year. Obstetric dating commonly treats gestation as about 40 weeks, or 280 days, counted from the first day of the last menstrual period, not from a 1 January. Forty weeks is 280 days; a year is 365 or 366. The leftover is more than twelve weeks. Calling pregnancy “nine months” and a year “twelve months” is a different split again, because those months are not equal weeks.

Trimester weeks exist to cut the 40-week span into thirds that clinicians can name. They are not three equal pieces of a calendar year, and they are not three academic terms. If you came here from a year-length query, keep the 52-plus-remainder figure for the year, then use the trimester boundaries below only for pregnancy dating.

First trimester weeks

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists describes the first trimester as the first day of the last menstrual period through 13 weeks and 6 days. That is the stretch people mean by first trimester weeks and by first trimester is how many weeks: through the end of week 13, not a round 12 unless a particular clinic still speaks that way. Some public pages still say week 1 through week 12. The ACOG cut is the one that also matches a first-trimester ultrasound limit of up to and including 13 weeks 6 days.

Weeks 1 and 2 of that count are before fertilization in the usual last-period method. The clock starts on a bleed that already happened. That is why a person can be “four weeks pregnant” on a chart shortly after a missed period. The first trimester is not twelve weeks of known pregnancy after a test. It is a labelled block on the 40-week scale.

Second and third trimester weeks

ACOG places the second trimester from 14 weeks 0 days through 27 weeks 6 days. Third trimester weeks begin at 28 weeks 0 days and run through 40 weeks 6 days on that same scale, with birth sometimes earlier or later than week 40. Other summaries start the second trimester at week 13 or end it at week 28. The boundaries move by a week depending on who is speaking. Ask which cut your clinician uses if a form depends on it.

Year (common): 52 weeks + 1 day. Year (leap): 52 weeks + 2 days. First trimester (ACOG): LMP through 13 weeks 6 days. Second trimester (ACOG): 14 weeks 0 days through 27 weeks 6 days. Third trimester (ACOG): 28 weeks 0 days through 40 weeks 6 days, with delivery not fixed to day 280.

Forty weeks is a dating scale. Fifty-two weeks and a leftover day is a year. Mixing them is how a due date pretends to be a New Year.

Do not convert a trimester into a calendar quarter

A calendar quarter is thirteen weeks on a 52-week poster, or a three-month block such as January–March. A pregnancy trimester is not January–March unless the last period happened to fall that way. Second trimester weeks can sit in winter or in summer depending on the start date. Third trimester weeks are “late pregnancy” on the 40-week scale, not “Q3.” If you need remaining weeks of the civil year, that is a different page of arithmetic.

Full term, in the ACOG and SMFM delivery labels, is 39 weeks 0 days through 40 weeks 6 days, which is inside the third trimester, not a fourth one. Early term, late term, and postterm are further labels after 37 weeks. They do not create extra trimesters.

Questions and answers

How many weeks is the first trimester?
ACOG: from the first day of the last menstrual period through 13 weeks 6 days. Some older summaries stop at week 12. Use the cut your clinician writes on the chart.
When do second and third trimester weeks start?
On the ACOG split, second starts at 14 weeks 0 days and third at 28 weeks 0 days.
How many weeks to a year?
52 weeks plus 1 day in a common year, plus 2 days in a leap year. That is not the 40-week pregnancy scale.
