Transgender day of visibility

How it works

The date is fixed to the 31st, not to a Monday rule. Rachel Crandall-Crocker of Michigan organized the first International Transgender Day of Visibility in 2009 so that living trans people would have a day that was not only a memorial. She placed it at the end of March to keep space from Transgender Day of Remembrance in November and from Pride Month in June. The first events included a panel in metro Detroit. The day spread as a community observance, not as a statute.

How it works on the calendar is simple. If today is 31 March, the named day is in force. If today is 3 September 2026, it is not. There is no observed-Friday shift. Offices, mail, and banks follow an ordinary Thursday. A workplace, a campus, or a city may hold a program; that program is local. It does not rewrite the federal list.

Visibility here means public presence: names, stories, gatherings, flags, and ordinary going about a day without being reduced to a eulogy. It is not a test that every trans person must be photographed. People who stay private are not failing the date. The day is an invitation, not a roll call.

Bi visibility day is a different September square

Bi visibility day, also called Celebrate Bisexuality Day, is 23 September. Wendy Curry, Michael Page, and Gigi Raven Wilbur set that date in 1999; the first official marking included the International Lesbian and Gay Association conference in Johannesburg. The 23rd was Wilbur’s birthday and a weekend that year. It is not 31 March and not a second name for Transgender Day of Visibility.

From Thursday 3 September 2026, 23 September is twenty days ahead, a Wednesday. Transgender Day of Visibility 2026 is already behind you. The next March 31 is 209 days ahead. If a poster prints “visibility day” without a community, read the month. March is trans. Late September is bi. Mixing the two squares erases both calendars at once.

Transgender Day of Visibility: 31 March, since 2009. 2026 date: Tuesday 31 March, already past. 2027 date: Wednesday 31 March. Bi Visibility Day: 23 September; in 2026 that is Wednesday, 20 days from this Thursday.

Community dates only: no federal close on 31 March or 23 September. March 31 is for people who are here. Do not borrow November’s memorial and call the loan a celebration.

Remembrance is November, not March

Transgender Day of Remembrance is 20 November. Gwendolyn Ann Smith founded it in 1999 to name trans people who were killed. The mood is mourning and a reading of names. It is related to this March date the way a funeral is related to a birthday: same community, opposite job. Do not schedule a party on the 20th and call it visibility, and do not turn 31 March into a roll of the dead unless a local gathering chose a mixed program on purpose.

Pride Month is June. International Non-Binary People’s Day is 14 July. Those are further names with further squares. A year can hold all of them. A Thursday in September holds none of the March or November dates. If you are marking someone today, you are keeping a personal date. You are not early for March and you are not late for last March. You are on 3 September.

Put 31 March on a calendar as a repeating yearly square. Put 23 September on the same calendar under its own title. Put 20 November under a third title. The software will not merge them unless you tell it to, and you should not.
