Transgender day of remembrance
Transgender Day of Remembrance is 20 November every year. It is a memorial for trans people who were killed, not a public holiday. From 3 September 2026 the next date is Friday, 20 November 2026.
How it works
The date is fixed to the 20th, not to a Monday holiday rule. Gwendolyn Ann Smith founded the day in 1999 after the murder of Rita Hester in Allston, Massachusetts, in November 1998. The work is to say the names of trans people who were killed, to hold vigils, and to refuse to let those deaths become an unlisted statistic. Offices, banks, and mail follow an ordinary November weekday. A campus or a city may lend a hall. That loan is local. It does not rewrite a federal list.
How it works on the calendar is blunt. If today is 20 November, the named day is in force. If today is 3 September 2026, it is not. Seventy-eight days remain until Friday, 20 November 2026. The next 20 November after that is Saturday, 20 November 2027. There is no observed-Friday shift when the 20th is a weekend. A Saturday vigil is still 20 November. A Monday program is a scheduling choice, not a moved memorial.
Names, not a festival
The tone is mourning. People light candles, read names, stand in a square, or sit in a room. Lists of the dead are compiled by community projects and local organisers; they are incomplete because not every death is reported as a trans person’s death. Do not invent a count to make the night feel finished. Do not turn the microphone into a debate club. The date is not Pride. It is not a sale. It is not a costume holiday.

March is visibility; November is this page
Transgender Day of Visibility is 31 March. Rachel Crandall-Crocker organized that day in 2009 so living trans people would have a date that was not only a funeral. March 31 2026 has already passed. The next 31 March is 31 March 2027. Do not schedule a party on 20 November and call it visibility. Do not turn 31 March into a roll of the dead unless a local gathering chose a mixed program on purpose and said so.
Pride Month is June. International Non-Binary People’s Day is 14 July. Those are further squares. A year can hold all of them. A Thursday in September holds none of them. If you are remembering someone today, you are keeping a personal date. You are not early for November and you are not late for last November. You are on 3 September. Put 20 November on the calendar under its own title. Put 31 March under another. The software will not merge them unless you tell it to, and you should not.
