Tomb sweep day
Tomb Sweep Day is Qingming, a Chinese ancestral day on the solar calendar, usually 4 or 5 April. In 2026 it falls on 5 April. Families visit graves in early spring.
How it works
How it works is solar, not lunar. Qingming is the fifth of the twenty-four solar terms. The festival is kept on the first day of that term, which the Gregorian calendar usually prints as 4 April or 5 April, and only rarely as 6 April. You do not find it by counting moons from Chinese New Year. You find it by the sun’s place in the year, which is why the date stays in early April even when Lunar New Year jumped in February.
English names pile up: Tomb Sweeping Day, Tomb-Sweeping Day, Ching Ming, Qingming Festival, Pure Brightness. They point at the same spring mark. In mainland China it is a public holiday; it is also observed as a public holiday in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. The holiday window around it can include neighbouring weekend days. The festival day itself is the Qingming date, not whichever Monday a travel package prefers.
In 2026 Qingming is 5 April, a Sunday. That is a fact for that year. 2025 sat on 4 April. Memorising “always the fifth” will fail you on the years it is the fourth. Look up the solar term for the year you are travelling, then buy the train ticket.
Usual Gregorian squares: 4 April or 5 April. 2026: 5 April. Tied to a solar term, not to a moon phase. A public holiday in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. Mainland China restored Qingming as an official public holiday in 2008. The customs are much older than that administrative date. The 2008 stamp tells you when the modern work calendar started blocking the day off. It does not tell you when families first swept a grave in spring.
Why the square moves by a day
A solar term is an astronomical box. The Gregorian civil day is a midnight-to-midnight box. When the term begins just before or just after a local midnight, the printed date can be the fourth or the fifth. Leap years shove the civil calendar as well. The folk shorthand “Qingming on 4–5 April” is the honest range. A screenshot of last year’s almanac is not this year’s ticket.
This is the opposite of a festival that follows the moon, such as Mid-Autumn, which wanders across September and October. Tomb Sweep Day stays in early April because spring, in this system, is a solar season. The weather can still be cold. The calendar is not promising a picnic temperature. It is promising a place on the year.
If you live far from East Asia, 5 April 2026 is still 5 April. The public holiday does not follow you to another country’s labour law. A diaspora family can keep the visit on the Qingming date, or on the nearest weekend they can travel. The solar term does not move to accommodate a foreign roster. The family schedule might.
The grave does not relocate because last year’s April fifth became this year’s April fourth. You go when Qingming is, not when a saved photo of the calendar still looks familiar.
Spring at the grave, and away from it
The English name tells the main errand: families clean and tend ancestral tombs. They cut weeds, mend the mound, and leave offerings. Paper money and incense are common. Food may be set out. The visit is a duty of memory, not a tourist checkbox, even though spring travel around the holiday is heavy in China.
Qingming is also a spring outing. After the grave, or instead of a long journey when a grave is far, people walk outside, fly kites, and eat spring foods such as qingtuan where that pastry is the local custom. The day holds both the cleaning and the green of the season. Calling it only sad or only a picnic misses half of the date.
Cold Food Festival customs sit in the same spring neighbourhood in older practice: eating food that was not cooked that day. You do not need that history to find 5 April 2026 on a planner. You need it only if you are explaining why the festival feels both spare and outdoor. For a ticket, the solar date is enough.
