Timezone india
India uses one time zone for the whole country: India Standard Time, 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of UTC. The timezone in India and the timezone for India are that same clock.
How it works
IST is UTC+5:30 year-round. India does not use daylight saving time, so you do not “spring forward” or “fall back” on the civil clock. Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, New Delhi, and a village in the far east or west all post the same time of day. The country is wide, but the zone is single.
In software, the usual IANA name is Asia/Kolkata. That name follows the legal offset. The letters IST are not unique worldwide: they are also used for Irish Standard Time and Israel Standard Time, which are not UTC+5:30. If a meeting could be international, write “India Standard Time,” “UTC+5:30,” or a city in India, not a bare IST.
The half hour is real. India is not “about five hours ahead of UTC.” It is five hours and thirty minutes. Rounding to five or to six will miss the meeting by half an hour, which is enough to join a call after it started.
India paired with other clocks
A timezone question is often a pair: India and somewhere else, same instant, two local readings. Add or subtract the offsets. Do not convert through a U.S. zone unless one side is actually there. UTC or GMT (when GMT is UTC+0): India is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead. Noon UTC is 5:30 p.m. IST.
United Kingdom on BST (UTC+1): India is 4 hours 30 minutes ahead. Noon in London in summer is 4:30 p.m. in India. U.S. Eastern Standard Time (UTC−5): India is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead. 9 a.m. EST is 7:30 p.m. IST.
U.S. Eastern Daylight Time (UTC−4): India is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead. U.S. Pacific Standard Time (UTC−8): India is 13 hours 30 minutes ahead. Pakistan Standard Time (UTC+5): India is 30 minutes ahead of Pakistan.
Bangladesh Standard Time (UTC+6): India is 30 minutes behind Bangladesh. Nepal Time (UTC+5:45): Nepal is 15 minutes ahead of India. China Standard Time (UTC+8): India is 2 hours 30 minutes behind China.
When the other country uses daylight time and India does not, the gap changes twice a year on their calendar, not on India’s. The timezone for India stays +5:30. Their offset moves. Recalculate the pair after their change, not after a fictional Indian change.
India kept the extra thirty minutes on purpose. Treat the half hour as part of the zone, not as a rounding error.
One country, one civil time
The timezone in India is not a menu of city zones the way the United States is. You do not ask whether a town is “India East” or “India West” for legal time. Offices, railways, and broadcasters run on IST. Sunrise and sunset still differ by longitude — the sun is not on IST — but the clock on the wall is.
Sri Lanka uses UTC+5:30 as well, so a Colombo clock and a Delhi clock can show the same time of day while remaining two countries. That is a pair with a zero offset, not proof that the zones are one political system. Write the city if the document needs a jurisdiction.
Travel days are when people keep the previous country’s clock in their head. You land in Bengaluru and still subtract as if you were in London. Set the phone to local, then convert the other city from IST. The timezone for India did not move while you were in the air. You did.
Questions and answers
- What is the timezone in India?
- India Standard Time, UTC+5:30, for the whole country, with no daylight saving time.
- What is the timezone for India in a calendar invite?
- Use Asia/Kolkata, UTC+5:30, or an Indian city name. Avoid a bare “IST,” which other countries also use.
- Is India five hours ahead of UTC?
- No. It is five hours and thirty minutes ahead. Dropping the thirty minutes misses the conversion.
