Thirteen days
Thirteen days is a stretch of 13 midnights-apart calendar dates: one week plus six days, or 312 hours if you count 24 hours in each day.
How it works
Pick a start date. Count thirteen midnights forward, or add 13 to the day number and carry into the next month when you run out of days. From 1 March, thirteen days later is 14 March in a non-leap-year March of 31 days: you move 13 days after the start if you want the date that many days later, which is the 14th when you treat the 1st as day zero of the count, or the 13th if you are naming a 13-day inclusive block that begins on the 1st and ends on the 13th.
Say which count you are using. Exclusive “13 days from now” from 1 March lands on 14 March. Inclusive “a thirteen-day period starting 1 March” runs 1 through 13 March. Those two answers differ by one calendar date. Most timers mean the exclusive span: now plus 13 × 24 hours.
Thirteen days is not two weeks. Two weeks is 14 days. Thirteen is one day short of a fortnight. If a form offers “two weeks,” do not write 13 and hope. If a form offers “13 days,” do not round up to 14.
Hours, weeks, and a named crisis
13 × 24 = 312 hours. 13 × 1,440 minutes in a day = 18,720 minutes. Those products assume every day is 24 hours. A locale that starts or ends daylight saving time inside the thirteen days will have one 23-hour or 25-hour civil day. The date count is still 13. The hour count then is 311 or 313 for that particular window, not 312. If you need hours, check whether a clock change sits inside the span. If you need dates, ignore the clock change.
The Cuban Missile Crisis is often dated 16–28 October 1962. That inclusive range is 13 days: 28 − 16 + 1 = 13. The 2000 film Thirteen Days uses that episode as its subject. The title is a count, not a metaphor. You can use the same arithmetic on a quiet fortnight of leave. History does not own the number 13.
13 days = 1 week + 6 days. 13 days = 312 hours when every day has 24 hours. 13 days inclusive from date D ends on D + 12 days. 13 days from now, exclusive, ends on today + 13. Thirteen days is a fortnight that lost a day, not a week that found six extra friends in a different month.
Putting 13 days on a planner
A 13-day return window, a 13-day wait, and a 13-day trip all need a written start. Write the first date and whether the last date is included. “Back in 13 days” from a Monday is a Sunday if you mean plus 13 exclusive days (Monday + 13 = Sunday). Check on your fingers once: Monday as 0, Tuesday 1, … Sunday is 6, the next Sunday is 13. Yes: a Monday plus 13 days is a Sunday.
Month lengths matter when you cross an end of month. From 25 January, plus 13 exclusive days is 7 February in a common January of 31 days (6 days left in January after the 25th, then 7 in February). From 25 January inclusive for 13 days is 25 January through 6 February. Do the carry on paper when the month is February.
Do not convert 13 days into 13 business days unless the rule said business days. Business days skip weekends and often skip holidays. Thirteen weekdays is a longer calendar span than thirteen consecutive dates.
