How it works

A third day is an ordinal, not a federal holiday. You need a start date and a counting rule. Inclusive counting, the old civil and biblical habit, calls the start day “first,” the next day “second,” and the day after that “third.” Exclusive counting, the habit of “in three days from today,” often skips today and lands later. Say which rule you are using or two households will keep two third days.

Christmas Day is 25 December, the first of the twelve days in the Western church count that runs 25 December through 5 January, with Twelfth Night on the 5th and Epiphany on 6 January. On that count the second day is 26 December (Boxing Day in several countries) and the third day is 27 December. In 2026 those dates are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Another household counts the twelve days as 26 December through 6 January. Their third day is then 28 December. Neither count is a U.S. federal close. The federal holiday is the 25th.

Christian tradition speaks of the resurrection “on the third day.” In the inclusive count that is Sunday when Friday is the day of crucifixion: Friday first, Saturday second, Sunday third. Easter Sunday is that third day each year. It moves. The band named Third Day took that phrase as a name; the band is not the feast.

Twelve-days count from 25 December: third day = 27 December. Alternate twelve-days count from 26 December: third day = 28 December. Easter: Sunday as third day from Friday, in inclusive counting. Band: Christian rock group from Marietta, Georgia, named for that phrase.

If you cannot point at the first day, you do not have a third day. You have a number looking for a starting square.

The third morning of a holiday stretch

A three-day weekend is three dates. The third day is the last morning, often a Monday after a Saturday–Sunday pair, or a Sunday after a Friday holiday. Christmas 2026 falls on Friday, so many offices that close Friday through Sunday are looking at Monday 28 December as the return date, not as a third feast. The 27th is still the third calendar day of that weekend if Friday was day one. It is a Sunday that year. Schools and private jobs will print their own return. Do not upgrade Sunday 27 December 2026 into a federal holiday because it is the third day of Christmas in one hymn count.

Travel on the third day of a gathering is common: guests leave, kitchens quiet, trains fill. That is logistics. It does not create a named public day. If you need a reminder, label it “27 December” or “return Monday,” not “third day,” unless everyone in the thread already shares the start date.

The band is a name, not a date

Third Day formed in Marietta, Georgia, in 1991, with Mac Powell and Mark Lee among the founding members. The name refers to the resurrection on the third day. The group recorded Christian rock and worship albums, announced a farewell in 2018, and later returned for anniversary shows. A Christmas album from the band is still a record, not 27 December. Playing it on the third day of Christmas is a household choice. Playing it in July is still the same record. Searches for “third day songs” want that catalogue. Searches for “third day” on a holiday planner want the ordinal. Keep the discography off the Advent calendar unless you meant to put it there.

If a listing shows Third Monday Trade Days, that is a market custom tied to a Monday, not to Christmas and not to the band. Read the town’s flyer. A Monday market is a weekday rule. The third day of Christmas is a date rule. They only meet when 27 December happens to be a Monday, which it is not in 2026.
