The spanish days of the week

The Spanish days of the week are lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes, sábado and domingo. In ordinary Spanish they are written in lowercase.

what are the spanish days of the week

Those seven names map to Monday through Sunday in that order. Lunes is Monday. Domingo is Sunday. The set is the same across Spanish-speaking countries; what changes is which day a printed calendar puts in the first column.

People look up days of the week spanish, the days of the week in spanish, and days of the week in spanish for the same list. The words do not change with the wording of the query. Learn the seven names once and you can read a timetable, a class plan, or a shop sign.

lunes — Monday martes — Tuesday miércoles — Wednesday jueves — Thursday viernes — Friday sábado — Saturday domingo — Sunday Miércoles and sábado carry accents. Missing the accent does not invent a new weekday, but it is a spelling error. Keep the marks when you write for a class or a public page.

How to say the days of the week in Spanish in a sentence

Use the article el before a weekday when you mean “on that day” as a habit: el lunes, el viernes. For more than one occurrence, los takes the plural: los sábados. You do not need a separate word for “on” in that pattern.

Hoy es jueves means today is Thursday. Mañana es viernes means tomorrow is Friday. A date can sit beside the weekday: el martes 8 de septiembre. The weekday still stays lowercase unless it is the first word of the sentence.

In Spanish days of the week are not treated as proper names. English capitalizes Monday because English treats weekdays that way. Spanish does not. Copying English capitals onto lunes is the usual learner tell.

Spanish does not treat martes as a proper name: it stays lowercase unless it starts the sentence.

Where the Spanish week is drawn

Many calendars in Spain and in ISO-style planners put lunes first and domingo last. Many United States wall calendars put Sunday first. The names do not move when the grid moves. Only the starting column moves.

If you are filling a bilingual planner, pick one start-of-week rule and keep it. Mixing a Sunday-first English grid with a Monday-first Spanish list is how people book the wrong morning. Write the seven names in order from lunes to domingo.

Decide whether your grid starts on Sunday or Monday. Place domingo in the Sunday column, not in whichever cell is leftmost. Read a real local calendar once to see which convention that place uses. Weekend language follows the split you already know: sábado and domingo are the weekend days in a Saturday–Sunday weekend. Lunes through viernes are the ordinary weekdays. The words do not hide a different weekend; they label the same seven-day cycle.

When you hear “fin de semana,” it points at that weekend pair, not at a fifth weekday. If a workplace uses a different rest pattern, the seven names still line up with Monday–Sunday. Only the work roster changes.

Questions and answers

Do I capitalize jueves?
Not in the middle of a sentence. Capitalize it only when it is the first word, the same as any other common noun in Spanish.
Is domingo the first day or the last?
It is Sunday. On a Monday-first calendar it is last. On a Sunday-first calendar it is first. The name does not change.
Are the names different in Mexico and Spain?
The seven weekday names are the same. Layout, workweek customs, and holiday calendars can differ; the vocabulary for the days does not.
