The last anniversary

How it works

Pick the original civil date. Each later calendar year has one anniversary of that month and day, except a 29 February event in a common year, which has no exact civil twin until the next leap year. The last anniversary is the latest of those repeats that is on or before today. The next anniversary is the earliest repeat still ahead. The anniversary, without “last” or “next,” is the recurring date itself.

From Thursday 3 September 2026 the rule is mechanical. If the event date sits from 1 January through 3 September, the last anniversary is already in 2026. If the event date sits from 4 September through 31 December, the last anniversary is still in 2025, and 2026’s copy has not arrived. Today is an anniversary only when the month and day match 3 September.

Age in whole years, for a person or for a marriage, is the number of last anniversaries that have already completed, counting the first anniversary as the one-year mark. A child born 3 September 2020 has had last anniversary 3 September 2026 if you are speaking on that day, and that is six completed years. Speaking on 2 September 2026, the last anniversary was 3 September 2025, and the completed years are five. The birthday party does not move the arithmetic; the date does.

The anniversary as a repeating date

The anniversary is a label on a calendar square that comes back. It does not care how you celebrate. It does care about leap day. An event on 28 February returns every year. An event on 29 February returns on 29 February in leap years. Some families mark 28 February or 1 March in common years for a leap-day event. That is a house rule. It is not a second leap day.

Do not count from the weekday. If you married on a Saturday, later anniversaries fall on whatever weekday that month and day happen to be. 2026 is a common year, so dates after 1 January sit one weekday later than they did in 2025, unless you are looking at a date that has not yet crossed the unused leftover day of the year in your own head. Compare month and day, then year. Ignore the Saturday of the original party unless you are planning a weekend gathering on purpose.

Write the original month, day, and year. Find the same month and day in the current year. If that date is today or earlier, it is the last anniversary. If it is still ahead, last year’s copy is last. Completed years equal last anniversary’s year minus original year.

Last is a direction on the timeline. If you need a cake for a date that has not happened yet, you are planning the next one and misnaming it.

When “last” means final, not most recent

English also uses last to mean final. “The last anniversary” can be a farewell event, the last time a group will mark a date because someone died, a firm closed, or a tradition stopped. That reading is not a counting formula. It is a decision that there will be no next one. If you are trying to compute an age or a length of marriage, ignore that sense. If you are writing an invitation that is meant as a closing gathering, say final, so the calendar meaning does not collide with the farewell meaning.

Inclusive versus exclusive years still matter. From 1 June 2016 to the last anniversary on 1 June 2026 is ten completed years. The span includes ten anniversaries after the start, or ten years of elapsed time at that midnight. Calling it an eleven-year mark because eleven calendar years appear in a list (2016 through 2026) is the inclusive-year trap. List the completed anniversaries, not the year numbers on the spine of a diary.
