How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is a different book. Dr. Seuss — Theodor Seuss Geisel — wrote and illustrated it. Random House issued the book in 1957 after a magazine appearance the same year. The Grinch, whose heart is “two sizes too small,” tries to stop Christmas for the Whos of Whoville by stealing their trappings. The Whos still sing. The Grinch’s heart grows. That plot is rhyme, theft, and a change of heart. It is not a Sunday-school rehearsal.

The Grinch book later became a 1966 animated television special from Chuck Jones, with Boris Karloff as narrator, a 2000 live-action film with Jim Carrey, and a 2018 animated film from Illumination. Those are Grinch titles. They do not contain the Herdmans. If a cover shows a green recluse on a mountain, you have Seuss. If it shows a pack of rough children and a church stage, you have Robinson.

People type the Grinch book next to “best Christmas pageant ever” because both are December reading about what the feast is for when the surface goes wrong. That is a theme, not a shared story. Keep the spines apart. A child who asked for the Herdmans will not be satisfied with Mount Crumpit, and a child who asked for the Grinch will not sit still for a pageant committee.

Robinson’s novel follows six siblings, the Herdmans, widely treated as the worst children in town. They muscle into the church Christmas pageant and take the lead roles, including Mary. The narrator, Beth, watches her mother, Grace, try to hold the production together after the usual director is out. The joke is social: the “good” children and adults have frozen the nativity into a polite habit. The Herdmans have never heard the story cleanly, so they ask blunt questions and play it as if it were news. The title’s “best” is earned at the end, not printed on the posters at the start.

In Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom the novel has also been sold as The Worst Kids in the World. That is the same book with another title, not a sequel. Sequels Robinson did write are The Best School Year Ever (1994) and The Best Halloween Ever (2004). Those are school-year and Halloween stories about the same family energy. They are not extra nativity plays.

Play, television, and the 2024 film

Robinson adapted her book for the stage. The play was first performed on 4 December 1981 in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and had a professional staging in 1982 at Seattle Children’s Theatre. Churches and schools still mount it because the cast is mostly children and the set can be a sanctuary they already have.

ABC broadcast a television film in 1983. Robinson wrote the teleplay. Loretta Swit starred. Fairuza Balk, then a child, appeared. That hour is the older screen version people mean when they say “the TV one.”

Dallas Jenkins directed a feature film released in the United States on 8 November 2024. Lionsgate distributed it. Judy Greer plays Grace. Pete Holmes and Lauren Graham appear; Graham narrates as the older Beth. The film is a period-flavoured adaptation of the 1972 book, not a remake of the Grinch, and not a documentary of any one parish. Runtime sits in ordinary feature length; read the listing on your ticket if you need the minutes for a bedtime.

A pageant that looks wrong at the first rehearsal can still be the one the town remembers. The Grinch’s mountain is another story: theft, then a change of heart, not six children at the manger. If you wanted the book, start with Robinson’s 1972 text. If you wanted the Grinch book, start with Seuss in 1957. If you wanted a night in a theatre, check whether the local poster says pageant, Grinch, or something else entirely. Titles in December are crowded. The spine and the credits are the map.
