Thanksgiving crafts
Thanksgiving crafts are things you make for the U.S. feast on the fourth Thursday of November. In 2026 that Thursday is 26 November. They are not Christmas crafts.
How it works
You make an object that belongs on that Thursday: a place card, a paper turkey, a leaf placemat, a chain of written thanks, a centrepiece from what the walk actually provided. The holiday is the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. In 2026 that is 26 November. In 2027 it is 25 November. The weekday is always Thursday. The numbered day walks. A craft finished on Wednesday is preparation. A craft finished in December is late for this feast and early for a different one.
Canadian Thanksgiving is a different civil date: the second Monday of October. In 2026 that Monday is 12 October. A paper turkey made for late November is the U.S. sitting. If you are keeping the Canadian Monday, use that Monday’s table. Do not file both Thursdays and Mondays under one glue stick and call the calendar solved.
Thanksgiving is a U.S. federal holiday. Schools and many offices close. Crafts are optional. They do not create a second legal day. They give hands something to do while a bird cooks, or they give children a mark at their place so the table feels like a table and not a meeting.
Projects that fit a Thursday
Hand turkeys — a traced palm with paper feathers — are the classroom classic. They look like hands. That is allowed. Pine cones with paper tails are the same joke in three dimensions. Leaf rubbings need actual leaves and a crayon; they also need a table you do not mind marking. Place cards can be a folded scrap with a name. Place cards and menu cards: names the table can read. Paper or pine-cone turkeys: the usual child project. Leaf prints, rubbings, and pressed-leaf runners: autumn on paper. Gratitude slips, chains, or a branch of notes: words, not only birds.
Simple centrepieces: fruit, greenery, candles with a stable base if you use flame. Keep food and glue apart when the food will be eaten. A painted pumpkin can sit as décor. A painted apple that someone might bite is a poor joke. Scissors are a tool; they are not a toy for the toddler who is also at the table. Paint needs drying time. Start before Thursday morning if the object has to look finished at noon.
Keep it Thanksgiving, not a second Christmas
Use autumn motifs: leaves, harvest, turkey, thanks — not Santa, not a fir tree, unless your house truly mixes the two on purpose. Finish before the meal or accept that the craft is for Friday. Give each child a job that matches their hands, not a display that needs an adult to complete it in secret.
Leave room on the table for plates. A centrepiece that occupies the turkey’s place has lost the plot. Throw away what will not keep. A leaf runner in December is compost, not an heirloom, unless you pressed it on purpose.
A paper turkey is allowed to look like a hand. It is not allowed to be the whole Thursday. Black Friday is the Friday after U.S. Thanksgiving. In 2026 that Friday is 27 November. Crafts are not a sale. If the household will shop that Friday, finish the table objects on Wednesday or Thursday and do not start a glitter project at midnight. Native American Heritage Month is also November. A classroom that only makes a cartoon turkey and never names the people in the actual history of the feast is doing a craft, not a history lesson.
