Tax free day in texas
Texas tax-free day is a three-day August sales-tax holiday, not one civic date. Qualifying clothes, shoes, school supplies, and backpacks priced under $100 can be bought without Texas sales tax.
How it works
The Texas Legislature set a weekend exemption, and the Comptroller of Public Accounts publishes each year's Friday-through-Sunday. In statute the window begins at 12:01 a.m. on the Friday before the fifteenth day preceding the fourth Monday in August, and it ends at midnight that Sunday. You do not pick a random Thursday in July. You wait for that published weekend.
The exemption is on the item, not on the shopper. You do not need to be a student. You do not need an exemption certificate for ordinary retail buys of qualifying goods. The sale must happen during the holiday. Buying on Thursday and picking up on Saturday does not rewrite Thursday into the weekend. Online, phone, and catalog orders placed with a seller who does business in Texas can qualify when the order is paid and accepted in the window, even if the box arrives later.
Tax-free is not a price of zero. The tag still has a price. State and local sales tax are what step aside on qualifying items. A $100 item is not under $100, so it stays taxable. Accessories such as jewelry, handbags, and watches are generally still taxed. Computers and textbooks are not on the clothing-and-supplies list. The Comptroller keeps the qualifying and non-qualifying lists; read those lists for the item in your cart.
What you can actually put in the bag
Most everyday clothing and footwear under $100 qualify: shirts, pants, dresses, jackets, sneakers. Specialized athletic gear such as cleats often does not. Student backpacks under $100 qualify; framed backpacks, luggage, and gym bags generally do not. School supplies on the state's closed list include things like binders, calculators, composition books, crayons, erasers, folders, glue, highlighters, notebooks, paper, pens, pencils, rulers, and scissors, each under $100.
Timing: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of the Comptroller's published weekend. Cap: under $100 per qualifying item. Typical yes: clothing, shoes, listed school supplies, student backpacks. Typical no: $100-and-up items, jewelry, handbags, computers, textbooks, many sports extras.
Layaway can fit if the qualifying item is placed on layaway or paid off during the holiday and still sits under the cap. If a seller charges tax by mistake on a qualifying item, the usual path is a refund from that seller. Do not invent a state rebate on your own. The holiday does not refund tax you paid in July.
The state does not make the backpack free. It only stops charging you for the privilege of buying one that weekend.
Missouri is a different tax-free weekend
People who type tax free day mo are asking about Missouri, not a Texas rule with a typo. Missouri's back-to-school sales tax holiday is a three-day period beginning at 12:01 a.m. on the first Friday in August and ending at midnight Sunday. Clothing at $100 or less per item can qualify. School supplies have a $50-per-purchase cap, which is not Texas's rule. Missouri also exempts, during that weekend, personal computers and some peripherals up to $1,500, software up to $350, and graphing calculators up to $150. Texas's August clothing holiday does not copy that electronics list.
Missouri also keeps a separate Show-Me Green holiday in April for certain ENERGY STAR appliances. That is not the August weekend. Kansas, next door, has not run a matching back-to-school tax weekend. Cross-border shoppers have to read the state they are standing in, not the one they drove from. A Texas cart on a Texas weekend follows Austin's list. A Missouri cart on the first Friday in August follows Jefferson City's list.
