How it works

The tester exchanges data with a server and clocks the exchange. Delay is a handful of short round trips. Download is a payload coming to you. Upload is a payload going out. The page reports rates, often in megabits per second, and a delay in milliseconds. Those figures describe this device, this radio or gateway, this moment. They do not read your plan on a bill. They do not measure a tower you are not using.

To test T-Mobile’s cellular path, use a phone or tablet that is actually on T-Mobile cellular. Turn off Wi-Fi if you meant the mobile network. A run on café Wi-Fi is a run on that café’s line, even if the phone has a T-Mobile SIM in it. A run on T-Mobile Home Internet through the gateway’s Wi-Fi is a run on that gateway’s path, which uses T-Mobile’s wireless network in a different box than the handheld radio in your pocket. Name which path you meant before you compare screenshots.

Keep the test in the foreground until it finishes. A backgrounded tab can be throttled by the phone. Stay still if you are comparing rooms. Then run it again. One screenshot is one weather report. Two disagreeing runs mean you measured a moving path, not a constant.

How to read a run without fooling yourself

Compare a run to another run on the same device, same place, same radio setting. A number from a friend’s phone in another city is a different story. Indoor and outdoor radios differ. A pocket and a window differ. A 4G badge and a 5G badge are different radios when the phone actually switched; the badge is not the throughput. If the complaint is a video call, look at delay and upload as well as download. A fat download with a sluggish upload is a common shape on many plans. It is not a broken tester if both numbers were measured.

Pick the path: handheld cellular, or the home gateway, not a random Wi-Fi. Close the streams you can control if you meant to measure the line rather than the movie. Let the run finish. Partial bars are not a result.

Read units: megabits per second are not megabytes per second. Repeat once. Change one thing at a time if you are hunting a bottleneck: window versus interior, VPN on versus off. A website speed test for a URL is a different instrument. That one times a page. Mixing the two is how a heavy homepage becomes a story about T-Mobile, or a weak radio becomes a story about someone else’s HTML. If the complaint is “this site is slow,” test the site. If the complaint is “my T-Mobile line feels thin,” this is the right family of tests.

What the snapshot cannot tell you

It cannot tell you last Tuesday. It cannot tell you a coverage map. It cannot tell you whether a game’s own servers are busy. It cannot tell you a neighbor’s Wi-Fi. It cannot tell you the speed at a cell you are not on. If you are in a moving car, you measured a moving radio. If a VPN is on, you measured the path through that VPN. If the phone is overheating and has already stepped down, you measured that stepped-down radio.

A T-Mobile speed test is a weather report for this radio, this minute. The plan on the bill is a different document, and the café Wi-Fi is a different sky. Write the three figures together, plus cellular or gateway, plus indoor or outdoor. “It was slow” is not a report you can compare after you walk to the window. The second run is the conversation. The first run is only the opening line. If both runs are thin in the same room and fine by the window, you learned about the room. If both runs are thin everywhere, you learned about the path you are on today, not about a number you remember from a store demo.
