How it works

St Paddy’s Day is the feast. The parade is a permit, a route, and a start time. Cities put pipes, schools, societies, and uniformed units on a road and close that road for a few hours. The saint’s day does not require a parade, and a parade does not rewrite the date. In Ireland 17 March is a public holiday. In the United States it is widely kept and is not a federal holiday. Banks and mail run an ordinary March weekday unless a city has its own rule.

Some towns march on the Saturday next to the 17th so more people can stand on a curb. That is crowd planning. It is not a movable Monday like Labor Day. St Paddy’s Day is the informal English for Saint Patrick’s Day. Paddy comes from Pádraig. Patty is a different nickname, the one that sits on Patricia and on a hamburger. Writing St Patty’s on a parade flyer is a common misspelling, not a second feast. Search boxes that say st paddy's day mean 17 March and the culture around it, including the march. They do not mean a food holiday.

The greeting is Happy St Patrick’s Day, or Happy St Paddy’s Day if you are already in the nickname. You can say it on the 17th without marching. You can march without going to church. Neither act moves March 18 into the feast. Leftover green on the 18th is laundry.

It marches up Fifth Avenue, typically from 44th Street toward 79th Street, and it is staged on 17 March itself when the city keeps the old habit. In 2026 that was Tuesday 17 March, stepping off in the late morning. The route passes St Patrick’s Cathedral. The parade is a marchers’ procession — bands, units, societies — not a float carnival. Street closures are a traffic fact for that day, not a national closing table.

Dublin holds a major parade as part of a wider festival around the national day. Chicago is known for dyeing the river green near the date. Those are other cities’ extras. A cancelled band in the rain does not cancel 17 March. If you needed the New York march, you needed that year’s route notice and a plan for a weekday Midtown. If you needed the feast only, you needed the 17th, wherever you stood, parade or no parade.
