How it works

How the day works depends on which Bartholomew you came for. For the church, 24 August is the feast of Saint Bartholomew, one of the Twelve. The Roman Martyrology keeps that date. Eastern churches use other commemorations, including 11 June in some Orthodox calendars. For French history, the same Western date is the anniversary of the Saint Bartholomew’s Day massacre, which began in Paris before dawn on 24 August 1572. One square, two jobs. Mixing them wastes a search.

In 2026 the Western feast was Monday 24 August. From Thursday 3 September 2026 that Monday has already passed. The next 24 August is Tuesday 24 August 2027. The date does not move to Sunday to make a long weekend. Latin-rite Catholics in the United States are not bound to hear Mass that day as a precept, the way they are on Sundays and on the U.S. holy days of obligation. A parish may still keep the feast. A workplace will not lock for it.

Bartholomew’s name in the synoptic lists means “son of Tolmai.” Many Christian writers identify him with Nathanael, whom Philip brings to Jesus in John’s Gospel, the man under the fig tree. The identification is traditional, not a sentence the New Testament writes out. After Pentecost, later stories send him east, often to Armenia, sometimes to India. The historical itinerary is not a travel diary you can check against a ticket stub.

The apostle’s feast

Western art often shows him with a knife, and sometimes with his own skin over his arm, because one martyrdom tradition says he was flayed and then beheaded, at Albanopolis in Greater Armenia, under a king the Latin passion names Astyages. Other tellings say beheading only. Michelangelo’s Last Judgment is the famous skin. Relics have been claimed at Lipari, Benevento, and the church of Saint Bartholomew on the Tiber Island in Rome. Those are cult sites, not a civil holiday timetable.

Armenian tradition honours Bartholomew, with Jude Thaddaeus, as an apostle of Armenia. That honour is a church memory, not a U.S. Monday-holiday rule. If you wanted a Mass, read the parish bulletin for 24 August. If you wanted a day off, you will not get one from this apostle in American law.

The 1572 massacre

On 18 August 1572, Paris hosted the wedding of Marguerite de Valois and Henri of Navarre, meant as a peace between Catholics and Huguenots after the Peace of Saint-Germain. On 22 August an assassin wounded the Huguenot leader Gaspard de Coligny. In the night of 23–24 August the crown’s circle ordered the killing of Huguenot leaders. Coligny was murdered in his lodging and thrown from a window. The violence spread through Paris and then into other French cities over the following days and weeks. Thousands of Protestants were killed. Exact tallies disagree, and this page will not invent one.

Charles IX and Catherine de’ Medici sit at the centre of every argument about who authorised what. The massacre did not end the French Wars of Religion. It became their most infamous date. Protestant Europe treated 24 August as a wound. Catholic courts, including Philip II and Pope Gregory XIII, received the news in other tones. None of that theology is a picnic plan.
