A common year has 365 days. 2026 has 365. 2027 has 365. A leap year has 366, and the next one is 2028, when 29 February returns. “How many days of a year” is that 365 or 366, not the length of a season. Spring is a slice of the year, not a second year.

198 days is more than half of 365. From 3 September 2026 to 20 March 2027 you wait through 198 dates. The wait crosses New Year, so it sits in two civil years: 120 days remain from 3 September 2026 to 1 January 2027, and then 78 days run from 1 January to 20 March 2027. 120 + 78 = 198. The year boundary does not add a day and does not remove one.

Twenty days is a much smaller slice: 20 of 365. Southern spring, measured from the same 3 September, is a short remainder of 2026, not a walk into 2027. The year still has 365 days; the season is simply near. Meteorological spring in the south already started on 1 September, so on the month-based clock that slice of the year has begun and the “days away” figure is zero.

Northern meteorological spring occupies March, April, and May: 31 + 30 + 31 = 92 days in a common year. That is 92 days of the year’s 365, not 198. The 198 is a wait from a September date until the next March equinox. The 92 is the length of the season once it has started on the weather-office clock. Do not swap those two numbers. One is distance. The other is duration.

Distance, season length, and the year

People hear “spring is how many days away” and answer with the length of spring, or with the length of the year. Those are three different piles: Days until the next spring start — 198 north, 20 south, from 3 September 2026, using equinoxes.

Days in the season after it starts — 92 for northern meteorological spring in a common year. Days of the year that contains them — 365 in 2026 and in 2027, 366 in 2028. Leap day does not sit in northern spring. 29 February, when it exists, sits at the end of meteorological winter in the north. 2028 will be one day longer than 2026, so a wait that crosses February 2028 is one day longer than the same wait in a common year. The wait from September 2026 to March 2027 does not cross a 29 February, so leap day does not change this particular 198.

A year is 365 days in 2026. Spring does not collect extra dates because the wait feels long.

Where the remaining days sit

From 3 September in the north the remaining days until spring are autumn and winter. They are still days of a year: named dates with weekdays, workdays, and weekends. They are not empty. Treating them as a blank gap before “real” time resumes in March is how a 198-day wait turns into a surprise. The year is already in progress. Spring is a later chapter, not a restart of the 365.

From 3 September in the south the remaining days until the equinox are the last of winter. The year is the same 365-day civil year. The chapter order is different. That is the whole use of “how many days of a year” on a page about spring: to stop the leftover count from being mistaken for a year, and to stop the year from being mistaken for a season.
