A common civil year has 365 days. A leap year has 366, with the extra day as 29 February. Those are the year lengths used on ordinary calendars in the Gregorian system. There is no third civil length in common use. “A year” in conversation usually means one of those two, not an average with a fraction of a day.

The leap rule is regular: a year divisible by 4 is a leap year, except a century year must be divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year and 1900 was not. You do not need a table of months to know the year length once you know whether February had 29 days. Summing the twelve months gives the same 365 or 366.

In hours, 365 × 24 = 8,760 and 366 × 24 = 8,784. Those figures ignore daylight-saving folds, which change labelled local hours without adding a calendar date. For “how many days of a year,” stay on dates. Hours are a different conversion.

Three years on a civil calendar

Three full calendar years are three copies of 365, plus one extra day if exactly one of those years is a leap year. Consecutive years are four years apart in the leap cycle, so three consecutive calendar years contain at most one 29 February. They can also contain none, when the three-year window sits between leap years, including around a century year that is not divisible by 400.

365 × 3 = 1,095 days (no leap day in the span). 365 × 3 + 1 = 1,096 days (one 29 February in the span). Three consecutive calendar years cannot contain two leap days, because leap days are four years apart.

If you mean “from this date to the same date three years later,” count the 29 Februarys strictly inside the interval. From 1 March 2019 to 1 March 2022 includes 29 February 2020, so 1,096 days. From 1 March 2021 to 1 March 2024 includes 29 February 2024, so 1,096 days. From 1 January 2021 to 1 January 2024 does not include a 29 February, because 2024’s leap day is still ahead of 1 January 2024; that span is 1,095 days. Keep the end date honest: from 1 March 2021 to 1 March 2023 is only two years.

Birthdays on 29 February are the awkward case: some places mark the third anniversary on 28 February, some on 1 March, in common years. That is a legal or social rule about the anniversary date, not a change to how many midnights passed. The elapsed days still include the leap day that actually occurred.

Leap days you must not skip

Write the start date and the end date, with years. List each 29 February that falls after the start and on or before the end, according to whether you count the end date as included. Add 1,095, then add one for each such leap day.

Do not add a leap day for a century year that is not divisible by 400. If the start is 29 February, say whether the third anniversary is the 28th or 1 March in a common year; that choice labels the end, it does not erase the extra day already lived.

Three times 365 is the easy part. The part that bites is the single 29 February hiding in the span. People sometimes multiply 365.25 × 3 and keep a fraction. That is an average used in astronomy-style year lengths, not a day you can circle on a wall calendar. Lived time in this system is whole dates. Three years how many days is 1,095 or 1,096. If a form needs one number and the span is not specified, the honest answer is those two figures, not a fake third number in the middle.
