How it works

SpongeBob SquarePants did not start with Christmas in the town. In Christmas Who?, Sandy Cheeks is the one who already knows the day. She explains it to SpongeBob. He explains it to everyone else, badly and at volume. Squidward wants none of it. When Santa does not appear as hoped, Squidward ends up in the red suit so the town still gets a morning. The episode is a double-length Season 2 story, the series’ first half-hour. It also introduces Patchy the Pirate and Potty the Parrot in live-action wraparounds. Nickelodeon still reruns it in December.

Later specials assume the town already knows the holiday. They are not remakes of that first lesson. They are new plots that happen to land on the same date on a cartoon calendar. If you want the origin story of Christmas in Bikini Bottom, you want Christmas Who?. If you want stop-motion fruitcake, you want a different hour.

The SpongeBob Christmas episodes

Christmas Who? is the foundation. It’s a SpongeBob Christmas! is the 2012 stop-motion special. Screen Novelties animated it in the look of old Rankin/Bass holiday hours. It premiered on CBS on 23 November 2012 and on Nickelodeon on 6 December 2012. Plankton laces fruitcakes with “jerktonium” so the town will land on the naughty list and he can wish for the Krabby Patty formula. SpongeBob stays kind enough to break the gag. The song “Don’t Be a Jerk (It’s Christmas),” from Tom Kenny and Andy Paley, sits at the centre of that one.

SpongeBob’s Road to Christmas aired on Nickelodeon on 10 December 2021. SpongeBob, Patrick, and Plankton head for the North Pole with a gift for Santa. Sandy’s Country Christmas is a later stop-motion holiday episode, from 2024, set around Sandy’s family. Patchy wraparounds come and go. None of these replace the others. They stack.

Christmas Who? (2000): Sandy teaches the holiday; Squidward becomes a last-minute Santa. It’s a SpongeBob Christmas! (2012): stop-motion; Plankton’s fruitcake plot; “Don’t Be a Jerk.” SpongeBob’s Road to Christmas (2021): a trip to the North Pole with a present.

Sandy’s Country Christmas (2024): another stop-motion holiday hour, on Sandy’s side of the family. Bikini Bottom learned Christmas from a squirrel from Texas. If that premise is not enough, you wanted a different cartoon.

How to play them without spoiling the first one

Show Christmas Who? first to anyone who has not seen a sponge keep the day. The later specials assume stockings, lists, and Santa as known objects. Stop-motion looks like a different show; warn a small child who thinks SpongeBob is only the usual drawings. Runtime on the early special is a full slot, not an eleven-minute short. If you are clipping for a party, the “Very First Christmas” song in Christmas Who? is the piece people remember. If you are clipping for a joke about fruitcake, you are in 2012.

Streaming tiles rename things. “SpongeBob Christmas” as a search may spit out a compilation, a colouring upload, or the 2012 hour. Check the episode title before you sit a child down. The cartoon Christmas is still 25 December in the story, even when the town is underwater and the snow is a drawing. It will not tell you how many days remain on your kitchen calendar.
