Western Easter day in 2026 was Sunday 5 April. That is the movable Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March. It is a spring feast in the Northern Hemisphere, weeks after the March equinox, long after the December short day. If “this year” still means 2026, Easter has already been used: 5 April. The next Western Easter is Sunday 28 March 2027. Orthodox Easter uses a different computus; in 2026 it was 12 April.

Easter and the shortest day are both calendar hunts, which is why they collide in a search box. They do not share a season in the north. Easter hunts eggs in lengthening light. The shortest day is the bottom of the dark. You cannot date one by the other. A church that is packed on 5 April is not marking the solstice. A person standing in weak noon light on 21 December is not late for Easter.

The Easter rule needs a Sunday. The solstice does not. It can fall on a Monday, a Thursday, or any other weekday. In 2026 the December solstice is 21 December in UTC. That date is a Monday. Easter that year was a Sunday in April. Keep the two rows separate on the planner.

Which end of the Earth is short

Day length follows tilt, not holidays. In the Northern Hemisphere the shortest daylight is at the December solstice, when the Sun is farthest south. In the Southern Hemisphere the shortest daylight is at the June solstice, when the Sun is farthest north. One Earth’s two winters. If you ask the question from Auckland, December is a long-day summer solstice, not a short one. If you ask it from Glasgow, June is the long day.

The solstice is an instant on the orbit, not a twenty-four-hour ceremony. Local clocks can print 20, 21, or 22 December depending on the time zone and the year. The useful habit is to read the solstice time in UTC and then convert, rather than memorising a single civil date as if it were Christmas. Christmas is 25 December every year. The short day is not.

What the short day is not

It is not the coldest day. Air and water lag the Sun, so the bitter stretch often comes in January in the north. It is not the first day of meteorological winter; that bookkeeping winter starts 1 December in the north, weeks before the solstice. It is not New Year’s Eve. It is not a school closing unless a local calendar already had a break. Polar night around the Arctic and Antarctic Circles is the extreme form of the same tilt, not a second kind of year.

After the short day, northern afternoons gain light in small steps. You will not feel a switch on the 22nd. The gain is real and slow. Planning sleep around “the darkest day” is reasonable; treating that Monday as a legal holiday is not. If you needed Easter, you needed April’s Sunday. If you needed the short day, you needed the winter solstice for your hemisphere, in the month that hemisphere is actually dark.
