How it works

September holidays in the United States are led by Labor Day, the first Monday of the month. September 1 itself is a public holiday only in years when that Monday falls on the first. How the month works is a mix of one federal holiday, several observances, and dates that matter in other countries on the same numbered squares. Labor Day is the U.S. federal holiday in September. It honors American workers. It is always that first Monday, not always the 1st. When September 1 is a Monday, Labor Day and “1 September holidays” are the same public day off. When September 1 is any other weekday, it is an ordinary date in the United States and Labor Day still arrives on the first Monday.

Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States runs from September 15 to October 15. It is a month-long observance, not a September 1 holiday. Mexican Independence Day is September 16. Keep those dates on their own squares.

September 1 is a school assembly in one country, a long weekend in another, and an ordinary Tuesday if Labor Day already has a later Monday.

The rest of a U.S. September

Labor Day weekend is the travel and closure block. Federal offices, post offices, and many banks close on Labor Day Monday. Many schools are already in session by then; some districts still treat the Monday as a day off. Retail hours vary by store. The Monday is the public holiday. The Saturday and Sunday before it are an ordinary weekend that people treat as a long break when they can. That weekend is not itself a federal holiday.

After Labor Day the month is mostly workdays and observances. Patriot Day on September 11 remembers the 2001 attacks; it is not a day off. Constitution Day on September 17 marks the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787; schools that receive federal funds have civics requirements around that date, but offices stay open. National Grandparents Day is the Sunday after Labor Day, a family observance on a weekend morning.
