Secretary day

Secretary Day is the older name for Administrative Professionals Day: the Wednesday of the last full week of April in the United States and Canada. It is not a public holiday.

How it works

The day sits inside Administrative Professionals Week, the last Monday-through-Friday block that lies entirely in April. The named day is that week’s Wednesday. In 2026 the Wednesday was 22 April. In 2027 it is 21 April. From 3 September 2026 the 2026 Wednesday is already past. The next U.S. and Canadian date is Wednesday, 21 April 2027. The day does not close banks. It does not cancel school. It does not move to Monday when Wednesday is busy. A lunch on Thursday can still be kind. It is not the named day.

The observance began as National Secretaries Week. U.S. Secretary of Commerce Charles W. Sawyer proclaimed the first week in June 1952, with that Wednesday as Secretaries Day. In 1955 the week moved to the last full week of April. The name later became Professional Secretaries Week, then Administrative Professionals Week in 2000, under what is now the International Association of Administrative Professionals. The wider title is the point: the day is for administrative assistants, secretaries, receptionists, and other support roles, not only the 1952 job title. People still search “secretary day.” They mean this Wednesday.

Late April is meteorological spring in the Northern Hemisphere. The thank-you is meant to land while offices are open and the school year, in districts that follow it, is still running. It is not a summer Friday off and not a December party. In 2026 the Wednesday shared its number with Earth Day, 22 April. They are not the same observance. The first is a thank-you inside an office. The second is a date about land, air, and water.

A spring Wednesday, not a closing

Cards, flowers, lunch, and a public thank-you are custom. None is required by statute. Some offices give a half day. That is the employer, not the calendar. Rule: Wednesday of the last full week of April (U.S. and Canada).

Older name: Secretaries Day / Secretary Day. Current name: Administrative Professionals Day, inside the same week. 2026: Wednesday, 22 April (already past from 3 September 2026). 2027: Wednesday, 21 April. Status: unofficial workplace day, not a legal closing.

Do not park the reminder on the week’s Friday and call the job done unless that is all you can keep. The printed day is Wednesday. Do not confuse the week with Teacher Appreciation Week in May or with Principals Day on 1 May. Those are other buildings. Do not confuse it with a personal day on a timesheet. A personal day is leave you take. This Wednesday is leave you might give someone else, if policy allows, or a greeting you give while everyone still works.

If the flowers arrive on Friday because Wednesday was busy, you have thanked the week, not the day.

Who it is for, and who it is not

The 2000 name change exists because the work outgrew one word. Executive assistants, office coordinators, receptionists, and people whose badges say something else still do the coordination the 1952 week was invented to notice. If your workplace still says Secretary Day on the cake, the cake can be right about the date and old about the title. Use the names people actually use for themselves.

It is not a holiday for every person who ever typed. Software developers, nurses, and teachers have other dates or none. It is not International Women’s Day (8 March) and not Equal Pay Day (a floating awareness date). It is not a license to dump a year’s worth of thanks into one bouquet and ignore the role until next April. A standing calendar reminder on the prior Friday is enough to order lunch. A group email at 16:59 on Wednesday is the greeting arriving after the workday it meant to mark.

Canada keeps the same Wednesday rule in common usage. Other countries may print a different secretaries’ date. Do not assume the U.S. Wednesday is universal. Ask which country the office is in. Then check that country’s own table. The U.S. and Canadian Wednesday remains the answer to this page’s title.
