How it works

The school sits in Westchester County, on Grandview Avenue, a short walk from the Rye Metro-North station. It is coeducational and college-preparatory. Families in Westchester, Fairfield County, and New York City use it as a day school: students go home at night. That is what “day” means in the name. It does not mean a festival. It does not mean a public holiday in the City of Rye or in New York State.

The institution began in 1869 as the Rye Female Seminary under Susan J. Life. In 1921 it merged with a boys’ school, the Rye Country School of Harrison, and the combined name became Rye Country Day. The motto Life used, still used, is “Not for Self, but for Service.” Those facts belong to a school history page. They do not mint a “Rye Country Day” on 17 September or on any other civic square.

If you searched the phrase because it looks like National Donut Day or Constitution Day, you have the wrong class of noun. Independent schools run academic calendars: terms, breaks, exam weeks, commencement. Those dates are published by the school for the current year. They are not federal observances. A snow day is weather. A holiday break is the school copying Christmas, Thanksgiving, or a New York public holiday onto its own grid.

If you need a Westchester public holiday, use the New York State list. If you need a U.S. unofficial observance, use the date of that observance. If you need admissions, tuition, or a sports schedule, those are school documents and they change by year.

A student who says “we have a day off” is describing a recess. A search engine that files this phrase next to National Sisters Day is describing a collision of the word “day.” You do not bring yellow flowers to Grandview Avenue because it is Yellow Flower Day, and you do not bring pancakes because it is IHOP’s Tuesday, unless the school itself is hosting something. The building is a school. Treat the clock as a school clock.
