Ramadan start

How it works

The Islamic calendar is lunar. Months begin with a new crescent, or with a calculated civil equivalent a country has chosen to follow. Ramadan is the ninth of those months. It does not begin on a fixed Gregorian square such as “the first Monday in March.” It begins when the previous month, Sha'ban, has ended, and the first night of Ramadan is named. Fasting then runs from the following dawn until sunset, for 29 or 30 days, until the next crescent names Eid al-Fitr.

Because a lunar year is shorter than a solar year, the civil date of the start walks backward by about eleven days each Gregorian year. Winter Ramadan and summer Ramadan are the same month on different parts of the solar calendar. Ramadan 2026 fell in February and March. From 3 September 2026 that start is in the past. The next start is in 2027. Treat a website’s projected first dawn as expected, not sealed. A mosque, a national moon committee, or the calendar your community actually uses is the start that counts for that community.

Two towns can open the month a day apart. That is not a broken rule. That is what happens when one place waits on a local sighting and another follows a pre-issued table. If you are travelling, ask the community you will be in on the eve, not the city you left. The start is a night, then a dawn. It is not a ribbon-cutting at 9:00.

What the first night and the first dawn are for

The night the month is declared is already Ramadan. People often use it for extra prayer and for a last ordinary meal pattern before the first suhoor. The first fast is the next daylight: stop eating before dawn, keep the fast until sunset, then iftar. You do not fast the night. You do not start the fast at midnight on a civil clock unless that midnight happens to be your dawn, which in most places it is not.

Watch for the announcement from the mosque or calendar you follow, not from a random countdown page. On the first night, set the suhoor alarm for before local dawn, not for a round hour that looks tidy.

Begin the fast at fajr. End it at maghrib. Repeat until the month is declared over. Do not treat a neighbour’s start as a personal error if their committee named a different night. Suhoor on the first morning is the same meal as later mornings: enough to hold you until sunset, finished before dawn. Iftar on the first evening is the first legal meal of the month’s daylight cycle. If you intended to fast and you missed the announcement by a few hours, that is a question for a scholar about that specific day, not a reason to invent a private start time.

The month does not start when a website feels ready. It starts when a community names the first night.

How to plan without a fake exact date

If you need to book leave, use a window around the expected 2027 dates and confirm when the crescent or the published calendar lands. If you need school or shift cover, say “the first days of Ramadan” until the night is named, then lock the dates. If you only needed to know whether Ramadan has started today, 3 September 2026, the answer is no: the 2026 month is over, and 2027 has not begun.

Do not copy last year’s civil date. Last year’s civil date has already walked. Do not copy Mecca’s clock if you are not in Mecca; copy the prayer timetable for where you will stand at dawn. Do not confuse the start of Ramadan with Eid. Eid is the feast that begins when Ramadan ends. The start is the other end of the same lunar bar.
