Ramadan greetings

How it works

The month is lunar. A greeting belongs to the nights and days of Ramadan, once a community has named the first night, not to a fixed Gregorian weekend printed years ahead. You say the words while people are fasting by day and eating after sunset. You do not save them for a random Friday in September because a shop hung a lantern in January. On 3 September 2026, Ramadan 2026 has already closed; that year the month sat in February and March. The next Ramadan is in 2027. Civil projections cluster around an opening in early February 2027, but a mosque or national moon committee still names the night that counts.

A greeting is speech. It is not the fast, and it is not Eid. The fast is dawn to sunset. Eid al-Fitr is the morning after the month. Mixing the three is how a kind message lands on the wrong morning. A non-Muslim can offer the greeting. The person who is fasting does not owe a theology lesson in return. One line is enough.

The two phrases people actually send

Ramadan Mubarak means a blessed Ramadan. Ramadan Kareem means a generous Ramadan. Both are widely used. Some households prefer one; some use both in the same week. Neither is a password. You do not fail the month by choosing the other. Arabic script and Latin letters both carry the same wish. A voice note, a card, and a message on a phone are the same custom in different wrappers.

Ramadan Mubarak — a blessed month. Ramadan Kareem — a generous month. Reply: the same phrase back, or a short blessing of your own, is ordinary. Eid Mubarak — for Eid al-Fitr after the last fast, not for the first suhoor.

Not a greeting: offering lunch at noon to someone who is keeping the fast, unless they asked. Longer Arabic lines exist. If you do not speak Arabic, the two English-and-Arabic phrases above are the ones people expect. Stacking a paragraph of transliterated prayer you cannot read is not more respectful. It is a paste. If you live with someone who is fasting, the practical greeting is often quieter: do not eat in their face at midday, and sit with them at maghrib if you are invited.

Eid words on a Ramadan morning are a calendar trip. Save Mubarak-for-the-feast until the month has actually ended.

When to send, and what the words do not close

Send the greeting at the start of the month, and as often as you would say hello during it. A message on the first night is timely. A message in the last ten nights is still in the month. A message a week after Eid is late; call it a belated wish or just say hello. Do not copy last year’s civil date. The lunar year is shorter than the solar year, so the civil square walks earlier. Last February is not a template for the next opening.

Some countries shorten public hours in Ramadan. Many do not. The United States does not close federal offices because someone typed Ramadan Mubarak. Shop shutters follow the town you are in. The greeting does not lock a till. If you needed restaurant hours, ask the restaurant. If you needed the worship rule, that is the fast and the prayer timetable, not this sentence.

Cards with crescents and lanterns are décor around the words. The words still have to match the month. A Christmas card with “Ramadan Kareem” taped over the tree is a Christmas card. Buy a blank card or send a message. The month is not improved by a recycled robin.
