Question of the day

A question of the day is one prompt for one calendar date. In a holiday season it can be a workplace icebreaker or an Advent-style daily note. It does not create a day off.

How it works

The unit is the date. You put one question on Monday, a different question on Tuesday, and you do not owe anyone Monday’s answer on Wednesday unless you filed it. That is the whole mechanism. A chalkboard, a standup agenda, a classroom carpet, a family group chat, or an Advent calendar with a sentence behind the door can all carry it. The container changes. The rule does not: one prompt, one date, then the next date gets the next prompt.

A question of the day for work is that rule on a working calendar. It lives at the start of a meeting or in a team channel. In ordinary weeks it is an icebreaker. In December it is often a holiday-flavoured icebreaker: favourite winter meal, a memory of a 24 December, a plan for the 25th. The flavour does not make it a public holiday. You still have a shift. Christmas Day remains 25 December. In 2026 that date is a Friday, 113 days from 3 September, and in the United States it is a federal holiday. The prompt on the 23rd does not move that Friday, and the prompt on the 26th does not extend it.

Advent calendars and daily holiday notes use the same date logic with a seasonal skin. A door numbered 1 through 24 is a question-of-the-day machine aimed at Christmas Eve. Opening two doors at once is skipping a date. Saving all the doors for the 25th is not a daily series; it is a box of leftover prompts. The feast is still the 25th whether the doors were opened on time or not.

Question of the day for work

Keep work prompts short, optional, and clear of performance review. A sentence on the way into the real agenda is enough. A question that demands medical detail, family conflict, salary, or a forced joke is not a calendar tool. Holiday weeks make that trap easier: not everyone keeps Christmas, not everyone has a table to describe, and not everyone wants to perform cheer. Rotate who writes the prompt. Put the text on the date so a substitute can still use it. Skip anyone who does not want to answer. The series survives.

Attach the prompt to the date, not to a document nobody opens. Make it answerable in one sentence before the meeting starts. In December, do not assume every colleague keeps the same feast. File yesterday’s prompt only if you care about the archive; otherwise let it expire with the date.

Do not use the slot to announce who must work on 25 December; that belongs in the roster. A classroom question of the day follows the same date rule with a different room. In the last week of term it can be seasonal without becoming a theology lesson. If the prompt is written on the board for a named date, a guest teacher can still ask it. If it lives only in one adult’s memory, it is not on the calendar, and the last day of term will eat it.

A holiday prompt expires with the date. Recycling yesterday’s joke is how December goes stale before the 25th arrives.

A daily tenant, not a feast

A question of the day is not Christmas, not Galentine’s Day, not Field Day, and not a visiting-child Thursday. Those marks, when they exist, are named dates or bookings. The daily prompt is a repeating tenant. Mixing them produces a confused agenda: people treat a riddle as time off, or they skip the riddle because they think it happens only on the 25th.

If you run a prompt through the holiday close, decide in advance what happens on 25 December 2026. Many workplaces are shut that Friday. A prompt with no audience is not a series; it is a message into an empty channel. Resume on the next working date with a new question, not with the one that sat unread over the feast. The 25th does not owe you an answer. It is already busy being a date.

Questions and answers

What is a question of the day for work?
One optional prompt attached to a working date, then a new one on the next working date. It is not time off.
Does a December prompt change Christmas Day?
No. Christmas Day remains 25 December. In 2026 that Friday is a U.S. federal holiday, 113 days from 3 September 2026.
Should I reuse last year’s holiday questions?
You can, if they still fit this year’s room. Attach them to this year’s dates. Do not paste a 24 December prompt onto the 25th and call it close enough.
