Qingming festival holiday
The Qingming festival holiday is Tomb-Sweeping Day, a Chinese public holiday on 4 or 5 April. In 2026 it was Sunday 5 April, with the weekday off on Monday 6 April. In 2027 it is Monday 5 April.
How it works
Qingming is a solar term: it falls on the fifteenth day after the spring equinox, which is why the civil date is 4 April in some years and 5 April in others. It is not a lunar new-year leftover and not a Monday invented for tourism. The Chinese Qingming festival is the day families visit graves, sweep the plot, pull weeds, and make offerings. The public holiday is the state’s leave around that solar term so people can travel to ancestral tombs. Those two facts share a name. They are not identical. A person can sweep a grave on a working Tuesday. A person can take the Monday off and never leave the city.
From Thursday, 3 September 2026, Qingming 2026 is past. The next festival date is Monday, 5 April 2027, two hundred and fourteen days away. Because 5 April 2027 is already a Monday, the holiday and the solar term sit on the same square unless that year’s gazette adds neighbouring days. In 2026 the term was a Sunday, so the observed weekday was Monday 6 April. Always read both lines: the festival date, and the days off.
Graves, willow, and a solar term
The work of the day is the visit. People clear the grave, burn paper offerings where that is still done and still allowed, leave food or flowers, and bow. Willow branches appear on some doors and heads as a spring custom tied to the same term. Cold Food Festival, Hanshi, sat next to Qingming in older calendars as a day without lighting a fire; the two observances have long overlapped in popular memory. You do not need to reconstruct a full ancient rite to keep the holiday. You do need a grave, a park memorial, or a quiet substitute if the tomb is far.
Rule: Qingming solar term, 4 or 5 April on the Gregorian wall. 2026: Sunday 5 April; observed weekday 6 April. 2027: Monday 5 April, two hundred and fourteen days from 3 September 2026. Job of the day: sweep and honour tombs, not light Spring Festival firecrackers.
Public holiday: mainland China and other Chinese jurisdictions that gazette it; not a U.S. federal close. A swept grave is the festival. A day off without the visit is only a Monday.
The holiday block is not the whole meaning
Travel at Qingming is heavy for the same reason Spring Festival travel is heavy: people go home. Tickets follow the leave notice, not the poem about spring. If a cemetery bans open flame, the ban is the rule in that cemetery. If a city has a public columbarium instead of a village plot, the visit still counts. English also calls the day Tomb-Sweeping Day. That translation is the job description. It is not a different festival.
Do not file Qingming as Easter because both can sit in April. Western Easter 2026 was Sunday 5 April, which happened to share the solar term that year. Easter is a Sunday after a church full moon. Qingming is a solar term. Sharing a number once is a coincidence, not a merger. In 2027 Easter and Qingming will not owe each other a date. Keep the rows separate.
