Purple day
Purple Day is 26 March each year: an epilepsy-awareness day begun in Nova Scotia in 2008. It is not a public holiday. People mark it by wearing purple and talking about seizures.
How it works
How it works is a fixed date and a colour. Cassidy Megan, a child in Nova Scotia living with epilepsy, asked her school for a day so classmates would not feel as alone as she had, and so people would know what to do if they saw a seizure. March is Epilepsy Awareness Month in that Canadian framing. The school’s open date was 26 March. She kept the number so no one would have to count “third Thursdays.” The first Purple Day was 26 March 2008. The colour is purple, including lavender, already used as an epilepsy colour; it was also the colour she liked.
The Epilepsy Association of Nova Scotia, later the Epilepsy Association of the Maritimes, helped from the start. In 2009 the Anita Kaufmann Foundation in New York joined to spread the day in the United States and further afield. On 28 June 2012 Canada’s Purple Day Act received royal assent, recognising 26 March as Purple Day in Canadian law. That is a named awareness date, not a nationwide day off. Banks still open. Schools may hold a purple assembly. They do not cancel the term.
In 2026 the date was Thursday 26 March. From 3 September 2026 that Thursday has passed. The next 26 March is Friday 26 March 2027. The date does not move to Monday. A workplace that invites purple shirts is making a local choice. A workplace that does nothing has not broken a holiday statute, because the day was not hired to lock the door.
What the day is for
Epilepsy is a neurological condition that causes recurrent seizures. Seizures are not all convulsions. Some are brief stares, confusion, or a change in awareness. Myths still treat epilepsy as possession, contagion, or a reason to keep someone out of ordinary rooms. Purple Day’s job, as Megan framed it, is talk: people with seizures are not alone, and bystanders can learn first aid that does not make the seizure worse.
Basic seizure first aid is not a costume. Protect the person from injury. Do not put objects in the mouth. Do not restrain. Time the event. Stay until it ends and the person is safe, and call emergency services when the seizure lasts, repeats, or the person is injured or pregnant, or it is a first seizure — following the guidance of local health services, not a social post. The awareness day is a reminder to learn that list from a medical source. It is not a licence to film a stranger on the floor.
Wear something purple on 26 March if you want the visible sign. Learn seizure first aid from a health authority or epilepsy organisation, not from a joke thread. Let people with epilepsy set the tone of their own story. A mascot is optional. Dignity is not.
Do not treat the date as a day off. Treat it as a conversation that can also happen on the 27th. Purple is a shirt. First aid is a habit. Only one of those still matters on 27 March.
Not a carnival, not a different purple
Other causes use purple. Spirit days, team colours, and other awareness weeks can collide with 26 March. If you need this date, name epilepsy in the caption. A purple cupcake with no words is a cupcake. International Epilepsy Day is a different observances calendar, often in February, run with other organisations. Purple Day stays on 26 March. Do not merge them to save a poster.
Megan’s day is grassroots on purpose: classrooms, workplaces, politicians who wear a ribbon, and, in later years, acknowledgements as far as the International Space Station. Scale does not change the date. It does not turn March into a federal closing in the United States. If you are planning a school event, pick 26 March or the nearest school day and say which you chose. If you missed 2026, the next square is 26 March 2027, a Friday. The condition does not wait for the colour. The colour is there so the condition is harder to ignore.
Questions and answers
- When is Purple Day?
- 26 March every year. In 2026 that was a Thursday. In 2027 it is a Friday.
- Is it a public holiday?
- No. Canada recognises the date in law as Purple Day. That recognition is awareness, not a nationwide shutdown. Other countries treat it as a voluntary observance.
- Who started it?
- Cassidy Megan of Nova Scotia, in 2008, with help from the Epilepsy Association of Nova Scotia. The Anita Kaufmann Foundation later helped spread it internationally.

10 year anniversary
A 10 year anniversary is the same month and day ten civil years after the original date. If that day does not exist in the later year, pick 28 February or 1 March and say which.
10000 days
10,000 days is a little more than 27 years: 27 × 365 = 9,855 days, so 145 days remain if you ignore leap days.
