Pacific Standard Time is three hours behind Eastern Standard Time. Noon EST is 9 a.m. PST when both places are on standard time.
How it works
PST is UTC−8. EST is UTC−5. The gap is three hours, always, while those two abbreviations are the ones in force. Pacific clocks are earlier in the day than Eastern clocks. When New York is eating lunch, Los Angeles is still in mid-morning. When Los Angeles hits 5 p.m., New York is already at 8 p.m. You add three hours going from Pacific to Eastern. You subtract three hours going from Eastern to Pacific.
People write pst or est when they mean “which coast is this meeting on?” The useful answer is not a preference. It is a conversion. If the invite says 10 a.m. EST, a Pacific reader sets 7 a.m. local. If the invite says 10 a.m. PST, an Eastern reader sets 1 p.m. local. Write the zone on the invite. A bare “10 a.m.” is how people miss the call.
IANA names are safer than letters in software: America/Los_Angeles for Pacific, America/New_York for Eastern. Those names switch to daylight time when the law says so. The letters PST and EST do not switch by themselves; PDT and EDT are the daylight labels.
Daylight time does not close the gap
Most of the U.S. Pacific and Eastern zones change clocks on the same dates: the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November. Both move one hour. The three-hour difference between the coasts stays three hours in summer too: PDT versus EDT is still three hours. PST and EST as a pair, PDT and EDT as a pair. The trap is mixing a standard letter with a daylight letter from the other coast.
Timezone PST to EST in winter is the clean case: add three. In summer, if someone still types PST when the West Coast is actually on PDT, they are an hour off in the label even if they meant “Pacific Time.” Ask for a city or an IANA zone when the letters look sloppy. “Pacific Time” and “Eastern Time” are the honest phrases when you do not want to track S versus D.
PST (UTC−8) to EST (UTC−5): add three hours. EST to PST: subtract three hours. PDT to EDT: still three hours; both are on daylight. Never treat “10 a.m. either coast” as the same instant. Add three hours going east, subtract three going west, and do not split the difference because the gap is not a maybe.
PST and EST in a working day
A full overlap for a two-coast workday is late morning in the West and afternoon in the East. 9 a.m. PST is noon EST. 2 p.m. PST is 5 p.m. EST, which is the edge of an Eastern office day. If you need both rooms awake, place the call in that overlap. A 6 p.m. EST “quick chat” is 3 p.m. PST, still working hours in the West and already evening in the East. A 7 a.m. EST standup is 4 a.m. PST, which is not a meeting, it is an alarm.
Hawaii is not PST. Hawaii Standard Time is UTC−10 and does not use daylight time. Alaska is not EST or PST. Arizona, except the Navajo Nation, stays on Mountain Standard Time year-round. Those places will not keep a neat three-hour step from New York all year. PST vs EST is a two-coast problem, not a map of every U.S. clock.
If you travel, change the phone’s zone to the city you are in, then convert the other coast from that. Mental math from your home zone while you are already in another zone is how 3 p.m. becomes 6 p.m. in the wrong direction. PST and EST are labels on instants, not on your identity.
