How it works

Prime Day is Amazon’s summer member sale. It began as a shorter event and, in recent years, has run four days. 2026 was the twelfth annual sale. Amazon moved it from the usual mid-July window into late June, citing the FIFA World Cup and the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence as reasons to avoid July.

The 2026 hours were a weekday block. The event was announced as 23–26 June. It started in the small hours of Tuesday 23 June, U.S. time, and ran through Friday 26 June, ending in the late evening Pacific time — early Saturday on the U.S. East Coast. The deals were built for people who could click during the workweek, not for a Saturday-only rush.

You generally need a Prime membership for the member prices. Other retailers run copycat sales across the same week. Those are not Prime Day. They are other companies using the same weekdays because that is when Amazon pulled the crowd.

A weekday sale with a weekend name

Shoppers say “Prime Week” because four days feel like a week and because the word “Day” no longer matches the length. In 2026 the four days were Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Saturday was after the main sale. Planning as if the bargains would wait for the weekend was a way to miss Friday night.

A weekday sale collides with work. If you can only shop Saturday, you are shopping the leftover, the extensions, or a different store’s weekend event. The Prime calendar that year did not owe you a Saturday. It owed you four dated weekdays.

Confirm the announced start and end, including the time zone Amazon named. Treat each weekday in that span as a shopping day, not a preview of the weekend. Do not assume Sunday deals are still “Prime Day.”

Watch the fall event separately: Prime Big Deal Days is a later sale, usually in October. Prime Week is four weekdays pretending to be a holiday. The cart does not know it is Tuesday, but your office does.

What is not Prime Week

Prime Big Deal Days is the autumn counterpart, often called “October Prime Day” by shoppers. It is a second event, not the second weekend of the June sale. Amazon has also run a spring sale in some years. None of those rename the June weekdays.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday sit in November. They are not Prime Week. A price that returns in November was not “kept” for you from June; it is a different calendar square. Membership still matters on Prime Day. It does not turn a random Wednesday in August into Prime Week.

If you are counting the week, use the numbered week that contains 23 June 2026, then look at which of those seven days Amazon actually discounted. The weekend at the end of that week was not the sale. The weekdays were.
