How it works

The date is 10 September every year. In 2026 that date is Thursday 10 September, seven days after 3 September. In 2027 it is Friday 10 September, 372 days after 3 September 2026. The square does not move to a Monday. Offices and banks follow ordinary hours unless a workplace chooses its own event.

People type suicide day when they mean this prevention date. There is no holiday called Suicide Day. The work of the date is prevention and help, not a nickname that sounds like a celebration. If the query was blunt, the calendar answer is still 10 September, and the useful next step is a real person or a local crisis service, not a countdown widget.

The day is promoted internationally by groups that work on suicide prevention, including the International Association for Suicide Prevention, with the World Health Organization. Countries and clinics add their own events. A school assembly, a workplace talk, or a fundraising walk can sit on that Thursday without turning the date into leave.

What the date is not

It is not a U.S. federal holiday. It is not Halloween, not a memorial Monday, and not a substitute for medical care. World Mental Health Day is a different mark: 10 October. In 2026 that date is a Saturday. Mixing September and October is how a prevention poster lands on the wrong month.

U.S. callers can reach 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Other countries keep different crisis numbers, and local emergency services exist where you are. A holiday page can name the date. It cannot take the call. If you are in danger now, stop reading the calendar and use the line that answers in your country.

10 October: World Mental Health Day, a different month. If the search was “suicide day,” the date is still 10 September, and the work is getting help, not finding a nickname.

How people mark 10 September

Marking the day can be a training hour, a donation to a local service, a check-in with someone you worry about, or learning the crisis number where you live. None of those requires a day off. None of those is improved by waiting for the Thursday if someone needs help on the 3rd. The date is a reminder for the public. The need does not wait for the reminder.

Lights, walks, and yellow or orange ribbons appear in some campaigns. They are optional signals, not a dress code and not a test of grief. If 10 September is already a family anniversary of another kind, you do not have to layer a public event on it. You can still use 988 or the local equivalent on any morning.
