How it works

Muslims pray five times in a civil day all year. Ramadan does not replace those five. It hangs the fast on two of them and adds night prayer for many people. Fajr is the dawn prayer; the fast begins then. Maghrib is the sunset prayer; iftar begins then. Dhuhr and Asr sit in the fasting daylight. Isha sits after nightfall. Taraweeh, the extra Ramadan night prayer, is prayed after Isha in congregation in many mosques. None of those names is a fixed hour such as “7:00.” The hour is the sky at your latitude, on that date, in that weather of light.

Ramadan 2026 sat in February and March and has already ended on 3 September 2026. The next month is in 2027, with civil projections often clustering around an early February opening, still subject to a crescent or a community calendar. When the month returns, the prayer timetable for your city returns with it. A table printed for last year’s February will not match next year’s February, because the solar day length will have shifted and the lunar dates will have walked.

The five times, and the Ramadan extras

Use the local mosque timetable or a prayer schedule built for your coordinates. Do not copy Mecca’s clock unless you are in Mecca. Do not copy a friend’s city an hour down the motorway if sunset there is not sunset here. Polar daylight needs a scholarly timetable for that place. A kitchen clock rounded to the next quarter-hour is a courtesy alarm, not the horizon.

Fajr — dawn. Finish suhoor before it. The fast has started when this prayer’s time has entered. Dhuhr — after the sun has passed the zenith. Still fasting. Asr — afternoon. Still fasting. Maghrib — sunset. Break the fast, then pray. Dates and water are a common first bite; they are not a law of interior design.

Isha — night. Taraweeh, where it is prayed, follows. Witr is part of that night worship in the usual school of practice. The last ten nights of Ramadan carry extra standing in prayer for many people, who seek Laylat al-Qadr among the odd nights of that ten. This page will not name a civil date for that night, because communities mark it by the lunar count, not by a worldwide sealed square. If you needed that night, follow the mosque you actually attend.

Maghrib is a horizon. Rounding it to a tidy kitchen hour does not make the sun set sooner.

How to live with the timetable

Set the suhoor alarm from Fajr, not from a round number that looks kind. Set iftar from Maghrib, not from “six-ish.” If you travel, the timetable of the city you land in that evening is the one that owns your sunset. If you work a shift that covers Maghrib, you still break the fast at sunset even if the break room clock says you are “on the clock.” The fast is worship. The employer’s timesheet is a timesheet. Where the two collide, that is a workplace and scholarly question, not a reason to invent a private sunset.

Taraweeh length varies by mosque: some pray a shorter set, some a longer one. Arriving for Isha and staying for as much of taraweeh as you can is ordinary. Leaving after a portion is also ordinary in many rooms. The five daily prayers remain the spine. The extra night prayer is a companion of the month, not a substitute for Fajr the next morning.

Non-Muslims who only needed to know when a colleague will eat should read Maghrib for that colleague’s city. Do not schedule a lunch meeting as a kindness in the fasting day. Schedule it after sunset, or do not schedule food. The prayer time is the polite clock for that problem.
