Pi day deals

Pi Day is March 14, written 3/14, matching the opening digits of pi. Deals that day are shop offers, not a public holiday. They last as long as the seller says, usually that date only.

How it works

The calendar fact is small and solid. In month/day numbering used in the United States, 14 March is 3/14. Pi begins 3.14. That visual rhyme is the whole holiday. It is not a solstice, not a religious feast, and not a bank-closing day.

Pi Day deals are a second layer: bakeries, pizza shops, and some retailers run a one-day special on pie, pizza, or a price that plays on 3.14. Those offers are commercial. They are not printed by the civil calendar. A shop that sits the day out still had a 14 March; it simply sold ordinary goods at ordinary prices.

Because the date is fixed, the weekday walks. In 2026, 14 March is a Saturday. Weekend Pi Day favors restaurants and hurts some school classroom parties, which then slide to the nearest Friday. The deal follows the shop hours, not the classroom.

A second math date exists: Pi Approximation Day on 22 July, because 22/7 is a common fraction near pi. It is a different square. A July pizza coupon is not a March Pi Day deal, even if the flyer uses a π symbol.

How to read a 3.14 offer

Read the date, the time window, the channel, and the limit. “Pi Day” on a poster that does not name 14 March is incomplete. “$3.14 off” without a minimum, a menu item, and an expiry is a slogan. The calendar can only tell you when 14 March is. The register tells you whether the offer is real.

Confirm the local date: 14 March in the shop’s time zone, not 13 March after a late-night order that crossed midnight. Check whether the price is dine-in, pickup, delivery, or app-only. Check whether 3.14 is a price, a discount, a time (3:14), or a quantity joke.

Expect participating locations only. A chain deal is not a law that binds every franchise. Do not assume last year’s offer returns. Deals are rewritten each March. This page will not list this year’s coupons. Lists of free slices go stale before the next 14 March, and a stale list is a kind of lie. If you want a deal, read the shop’s own notice for the year you are in, on or just before that Saturday or weekday.

Online orders have a timezone trap. A deal that ends at midnight in Eastern Time is already over in Central Time if you thought “tonight” meant your clock. The civil date of Pi Day is still 14 March where you are; the offer may be keyed to the seller’s headquarters zone. The honest move is to read the zone on the terms, not to argue with pi.

What Pi Day is not

It is not a U.S. federal holiday. Mail runs. Schools that throw a pie party are using classroom time, not a statutory day off. It is not Albert Einstein’s birthday as a second required meaning, even though 14 March is also that date; a physics classroom may note both, a pizza chain usually notes neither biography.

It is not an excuse to treat 3.14 as a round number for shipping days, notice periods, or month lengths. Pi is a ratio. March 14 is a date. Mixing them is the joke. Using them as a conversion factor is a mistake.

Pi does not go on sale. Pie sometimes does, and only until the shop turns the calendar page. If 14 March is a delivery deadline, it is a deadline because you wrote it, not because a constant of a circle is involved. Count the days in March: 31. The 14th is the fourteenth, whether or not anyone is eating pizza.

Questions and answers

When is Pi Day?
14 March every year. In 2026 that date is a Saturday. It is not a public holiday.
Are Pi Day deals the same every year?
No. Shops invent or skip them annually. Read the current notice. A list from another March is not a coupon.
Is 22 July also Pi Day?
No. 22 July is Pi Approximation Day, from the fraction 22/7. It is a different date with its own optional jokes.
