How it works

Rosenkrantz asked Hujar to recount the previous day in order, from waking to sleep, for a book she planned about how artists spent ordinary time. The tape of that sitting was later lost. A transcript turned up among Hujar’s papers at the Morgan Library and was published as a book, also titled Peter Hujar’s Day, in 2021. Sachs used that transcript as the spine of the film. Ben Whishaw plays Hujar. Rebecca Hall plays Rosenkrantz. The running time is 76 minutes. The picture premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on 27 January 2025 and opened in United States theatres on 7 November 2025.

None of that writes a square onto a civic calendar. There is no federal or state closing called Peter Hujar’s Day. Banks, mail, and schools do not pause because a film borrowed the word “day.” The 19 December in the story is 1974. Repeating 19 December now is a cinephile habit, not a statute. If you wanted a holiday page about 25 December or a Monday off, this title will not move those dates.

Hujar was a New York photographer. He died of AIDS in 1987, at fifty-three. The film does not turn that death into a feast day. It holds one recorded afternoon and the talk around it. A holiday page that ranks for the title still owes the calendar answer first: this is a movie. The civil date in front of you is whatever the ordinary grid already said.

A title that sounds like a feast

Search boxes file anything ending in “day” next to national days. That collision is spelling, not law. National Coming Out Day is 11 October, an awareness date with its own history. This film is not that date. It is also not a birthday party for Hujar on a repeating civil number you can set and forget. If a cinema or a streaming service puts the film on in December because the plot’s conversation sat in December, that is a programming choice. It does not create a December holiday.

What it is: a 2025 biographical drama from a 1974 transcript published in 2021. What the “day” in the title is: one recounted date in Hujar’s working life, 19 December 1974 in the source conversation.

What it is not: a public holiday, a bank close, or a substitute for 11 October or any other named civic day. Release marks: Sundance 27 January 2025; U.S. theatres 7 November 2025. If you came here from a “what national day is it today” list, skip this row unless the list is honestly labelling films. A national-day list that cannot tell a statute from a running time will also misfile other titles. Keep the film with films. Keep the holidays with the tables that close doors.

If you wanted the movie, search the title plus the director or the two leads. If you needed a civic close, name the country and read that country’s list. If you wanted 19 December as a personal watch date, that is a private plan, not a civic close. A day that fits on a tape is still a day. It is just not a day the mail stops for.

How to keep the date without inventing a feast

Watch the film when it is actually available to you. A Sundance date is a festival slot, already used. A November theatrical date is a 2025 window, already used. Later availability is whatever a distributor or a library still offers. Do not treat a 1974 December in the plot as this year’s December unless you chose that rhyme on purpose. Do not treat Hujar’s death year as an annual memorial square unless a museum or an estate has actually named one; this page will not invent that square.

If the search mixed this title with other “day” pages on a clock site, the useful split is simple. A countdown to a public holiday needs a legal date. A countdown to a screening needs a ticket.
