What is patriot day, without the extra s, is almost always a question about 11 September. After the 2001 attacks, Congress named September 11 Patriot Day, a national day of remembrance. Flags are often lowered to half-staff. Many workplaces pause in the morning. It is not a nationwide federal closing holiday like Christmas Day. Mail typically runs. Banks typically open. Schools are often in session. The date does not move to a Monday.

Patriots’ Day, with the s in Patriots and usually an apostrophe, is older and local. Massachusetts and Maine keep it as a legal holiday on the third Monday in April, in memory of the 19 April 1775 battles at Lexington and Concord. Before 1969 those states marked 19 April itself. The Monday rule is the modern civil form. The Boston Marathon is run on that Monday. That race is not Patriot Day in September. It is Patriots’ Day in April.

If they are asking in September, they mean the eleventh. If they are asking about a Monday off in New England in April, they mean Patriots’ Day.

When Patriots’ Day falls

When patriots day is the April holiday, count Mondays in April. The third one is the legal date in Massachusetts and Maine. In 2026 that Monday is 20 April. In other states it is an ordinary Monday unless a workplace has borrowed the New England calendar. It is not on the nationwide federal list, so a federal office in Ohio does not close because Boston is running.

19 April remains the historic anniversary. The Monday is the day off. If you are standing on a battlefield trail, the stone markers care about the 19th. If you are asking whether the town clerk is open, the clerk cares about the Monday. Both can be true in the same week.

Patriot day 2026 is still 11 September

Patriot day 2026 does not slide. The date is the eleventh of September, a Friday in 2026. From Thursday 3 September 2026 that Friday is eight days ahead. You do not get a three-day weekend out of it unless your employer creates one. Half-staff guidance and moments of silence follow the date, not the nearest Monday.

If you typed patriots day and meant the April Monday, 20 April 2026 is already behind this September page. The next Patriots’ Day after 3 September 2026 is in April 2027. Do not look for it in the autumn. The autumn date with a similar name is the eleventh, and it is not a day off for the country as a whole.

State holidays beyond Maine and Massachusetts are their own codes. Do not assume your state copied the April Monday. Read the state list. For a federal employee outside those states, April’s third Monday is usually ordinary time. September’s eleventh is ordinary time with remembrance, not a paid federal holiday.
