How it works

Count the Sundays in October and take the second one. In 2026 that Sunday is 11 October. In 2027 it is 10 October. The date moves because it is a weekday name inside a month, not a numbered square like 25 December. There is no Monday shift, because there is no legal holiday to observe. A congregation that prefers the whole month still has the second Sunday as the usual centrepiece.

October is widely kept in U.S. churches as Clergy Appreciation Month, also called Pastor Appreciation Month. Church groups have used the month that way since the 1990s, with Focus on the Family among the organisations that promoted a national October observance. The day grew out of the month: one Sunday to concentrate a thank-you that the month stretches. Priests, pastors, ministers, and other clergy are the intended names. A church that has no one with the title “pastor” can still keep the Sunday under the clergy name.

The day is a congregation’s feast, not the state’s. Federal offices stay open the following Monday unless that Monday is already some other holiday. Columbus Day, federally the second Monday in October, can fall the next morning. In 2026 that Monday is 12 October, the day after Pastor Appreciation Sunday. Do not mash the unofficial Sunday and the federal Monday into one long weekend. One is a church thank-you. The next is a legal close for federal workers, and even that Monday is an ordinary retail day in many towns.

A Sunday that is still a Sunday

Because the day is already a weekly worship morning, the “holiday” does not have to invent a gathering. The congregation is often already in the room. What changes is the content: a note, a meal after the service, a gift, a public word of thanks. A church that does none of those things has not cancelled a statute. It has skipped an unofficial custom. A church that does them on a different October Sunday has not broken a calendar law. It has picked another morning in the same month.

Cards exist because greeting-card aisles follow unofficial days. The aisle is not proof of a civic close. Mail still runs on that Saturday and that Monday. The Sunday in between was never a postal delivery day in ordinary U.S. practice. You cannot use the absence of Saturday-to-Monday mail as evidence that Pastor Appreciation Day “closed the country.”

Find October. Take the second Sunday; in 2026 that is 11 October. Treat the rest of October as Clergy Appreciation Month if the congregation is spreading thanks, not as extra days off. Leave federal Monday holidays on their own squares.

A thank-you that fits inside an ordinary Sunday service will actually arrive. A thank-you that waits for the building to close will wait forever, because this Sunday does not close it.

October as a month, not a lock

Some households keep the whole month: notes on several Sundays, a meal in the middle, help with a task the pastor would otherwise do alone. That is still not a public holiday month. Schools stay in session. The second Sunday can sit in the middle of a busy autumn: sports, midterms, the first cold snap in much of the north. The season is autumn. The day is a church morning in that season. It is not a harvest festival and not Reformation Day on 31 October, which is a different square with a different history.

If a congregation already thanks its clergy at Easter, at a pastoral anniversary, or at Christmas, those dates remain. Pastor Appreciation Day does not cancel them and does not require a second gift if the household already marked another square. The unofficial day is a reminder, not a debt collector. Missing the second Sunday does not move the next one. The next one is the second Sunday of the next October.
