Orange shirt day

How it works

Orange Shirt Day is a commemoration, not a costume holiday. It honours Survivors of the Indian Residential School system, their families, and the children who never came home. Phyllis Webstad has told how, as a six-year-old, she arrived at school in a new orange shirt her grandmother had bought, and the shirt was taken from her. The colour is the reminder. The phrase often paired with the day is Every Child Matters.

The first Orange Shirt Day was held in 2013 in the Cariboo Chilcotin region of British Columbia, around Williams Lake. September 30 was chosen because that is the season when children were taken to the schools, and because the last day of the month lets a school year begin before the commemoration. The date is fixed. In 2026 it is a Wednesday. In 2027 it is a Thursday. Leap day in February does not move 30 September.

In 2021 Canada created a federal statutory holiday on the same date: the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, answering Call to Action 80 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Bill C-5 received Royal Assent on 3 June 2021. The two names occupy one square. They are not two different dates. Phyllis Webstad has said the federal holiday did not replace Orange Shirt Day. The shirt came first. The statutory name sits beside it.

Why the date stays on the 30th

Movable North American holidays hunt for Mondays. Labor Day in the United States is the first Monday in September; in 2026 that is 7 September, weeks earlier than the 30th. Orange Shirt Day is not that Monday. It is a numbered Canadian date. Do not slide it to a Friday “so people can rest.” The commemoration is the 30th even if a ceremony is scheduled on a nearby weekday for staffing reasons.

If 30 September falls on a Saturday or Sunday, federal offices that close on the statutory holiday still follow their own weekend-and-holiday timetable. The commemoration itself remains the 30th. A workplace that has not made the day a paid holiday will still see the date on the wall. The shirt does not require a closed counter. The closed counter, where it exists, is a labour-law fact, not the meaning of the colour.

Civil date: 30 September every year. 2026 weekday: Wednesday. Federal statutory holiday in Canada: yes, from 2021, in the federal jurisdiction. Provincial or territorial paid holiday: only where that government has said so.

The residential school system was not a single morning. The last federally run school closed in 1996. A yearly date is a handle for memory, not a claim that the history fits inside twenty-four hours.

Shirt, holiday, and the rest of the year

Wearing orange on that date is a public sign. Buying a shirt is not the whole of the day. Listening to Survivors, teaching the history in a way that is accurate, and knowing whether your workplace is actually closed are different jobs. A costume shop treating the date as a colour theme has missed the point.

Wear the shirt on the 30th if you mark the day that way. Do not treat the colour as the whole of the date. From Thursday 3 September 2026 the next 30 September is 27 days away. Write the date and the year. If you need time off, ask which jurisdiction employs you. A federal worker and a worker in a province that has not made the day statutory will not share the same time off, even though they share the same square.
